Help our Mom get the care she needs!

You never think you’ll be in a spot to have to do something like this, but the amount of love we have for our mom is indescribable.

I became a police officer roughly 7 years ago because it has always been in my heart to protect and serve the community I work for. I care enough to put my life on the line every day to help others.

However, on May 21, 2019, I became helpless. My entire family became helpless. Our mom had to be rushed into emergency surgery for a life changing bleed on the brain. At that time, we were told by the doctor that she had a small chance of survival and our world stopped. She had suffered a brain aneurysm. When we finally got to see her after surgery she was intubated, hooked to oxygen and her right side of her head was dented in due to the fact that they didn’t put her skull back in. She wasn’t responding to any of us.

We thought we would never get the strongest woman in our lives back. She is the one that holds us all together. She is our biggest support system especially mine. Every day when I left for duty she hugged and kissed me telling me to be careful, stay smart and come home. Now we were praying, hugging and kissing her telling her to come home.

Just a few short days later my mom was following commands and opened her eye. She had survived. It was a miracle. She then had surgery for a peg for tube feeding and a trach for an airway to get oxygen since you can’t stay intubated for a long period of time .

As of now our mom has currently been to 6 different long term care facilities and in between those times she was rushed back to several hospitals for problems that could have been prevented. At the first facility she suffered another bleed on the brain due to either being dropped on her head or being hit in the head with an object. At the second facility she ended up needing to be hooked onto oxygen due to difficulty breathing. She was rushed to the ER and ended up with pneumonia. At the third facility where she should have been suctioned every 2/3 hours her trach got plugged and she ended up being rushed back to the ER where she turned blue and they almost had to call code blue on her. At the fourth facility she should have been treated for a bacteria infection in her blood that was causing high fevers and her to be very lethargic but they never hooked her up to antibiotics properly for her to receive what she needed therefore resulting in her to be rushed to the hospital again. On top of all of this she has a horrible bed sore that is several inches long and deep on her tailbone which is causing severe infections. She has had to have 2 surgeries for the bed sore and 1 requiring her to be put under for her bone to be grinded down to make sure the infection has not gotten to her bones.

All of these things have pushed her back tremendously. She is currently still missing the right side of her skull and due to these facilities negligence and being rushed back to the ER several times she has missed 4 appointments to see her neuro doctor to have her skull put back in. The doctor will not perform the surgery until her health is back to 100%. If we didn’t have these set backs and she stayed healthy our mom would be home by now with her husband, her kids, her only grandbaby and her puppy, Abby. She would be enjoying life, doing the things she loves like cooking, sewing, sitting by the bonfire, riding quads, going to the beach, fishing and crabbing and having her family and friends around her.

She is not receiving the proper rehab at these facilities. She is bedridden and can only move the left side of her body. Due to this lack of care and rehab, she is losing proper function on this side too.

We are currently at Atrium of Woodbury where her nurses and aides have pure hearts of gold. They do everything they need to do to keep her on the right path towards getting better. Once she is 100% healthier she can get back to her neuro doctor to hopefully get her skull put back in.

Unfortunately as we all know, health insurance becomes a battle! We are told our Mom has exhausted almost all of her medicare days due to the fact that she keeps getting placed into these low care and negligent facilities. They are now trying to kick her out of this good facility that we have finally made it to. We have finally found nurses/aides who come to work and actually CARE for their patients everyday.

For us to keep her here in this facility, Atrium, we would need to start paying out of pocket. Unfortunately that would cost our family about $600-$700 dollars a DAY. At this point in time we have no other option but to ask for help. We have come to realize that if she keeps going back to these poor long term care facilities she will end up dying. We have come a long way and have seen first hand that miracles really do happen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We thank you and we will continue to pray. Please help us bring her home!
