Help us get from a tent to a house.

Hello, My name is Scott Peters and I have been living and serving in Haiti since 2011. I have started an English language institute and a carpentry apprentice program. In 2019, I had an appendectomy in country and I was not recovering well, so I headed back to the states with my three oldest kids then 2, 3 and 5 years old. My recovery was doing well, but covid made travel difficult for a while so I decided to get another trade to take back to Haiti and teach. I learned to set tile. I missed Haiti, my wife and my boy Charlie that I left there at 2 months old.

I found a way to get back to Haiti. An organization was looking for someone to manage their carpentry shop and start a carpentry program on their campus. We jumped at the opportunity and moved back in December of 2022. After 5 months with that organization, it became apparent that our expectations were not lining up and we made the decision to move back to Gonaives, where we lived from 2011 to 2019. I have some land in Gonaives and I hired some guys to build a security wall and start building a house.

We figured that even though the house was not finished yet, we could make it work. We came up a little short. We are living on the property, I have a good size tent to keep the rain off and some tarps on the unfinished house to keep some tools dry, but we don't have a bathroom yet and it is no fun to cook in the rain!

Our short term goal is to put a roof on 1/4 of the house so that we have somewhere high and dry to sleep, build a bathroom and make a covered area to prepare and serve meals. The budget for this is $6500

The house is a 30 foot by 40 foot structure. There is one room at the end that is 10 feet by 30 feet, I would like to cover this room with a tin roof. I have to pour a bond beam on the top layer of blocks, frame in the doors and windows, build some trusses and put a tin roof on. I believe that I can get this all done for $1500 in materials

The most expensive part of this project is the bathroom. I intend to build a free standing bathroom building next to the house. The base of this building will be the septic system for the bathroom and bathrooms in any other structures that are built on the property in the future. The bathroom will be simple with a toilet, shower and sink inside and a couple of sinks outside for washing dishes and clothes. I think that $5000 in materials and some labor will get this building finished.

The last part of this project is making a place out of the sun and rain where we can cook and eat. I would also put the refrigerator and cooktop under this shelter. It will be built in the corner of our property, so there are two nice block walls already. The covered area will be approximately 12 feet by 12 feet. The cost of materials for this part is around $250

Thank you for taking the time to look at this opportunity to help. We look forward to this being finished so that I can continue to build furniture and relationships with whoever is still here in Haiti!
