We are ELBFLORACE, the Formula Student team at TU Dresden, and every year we participate in the Formula Student, the world’s largest engineering competition for students. With a team of 100 students, we build a fully electric and autonomous race car and compete with it against international teams from other universities at competitions throughout Europe.

During our first competition of the season, Formula Student Czech Republic in Most, a fire broke out in our race car ElliE. The fire damaged the lithium-ion battery, parts of the onboard electronics, and sections of the mechanical system.

The most important thing is that, thanks to our vehicle’s comprehensive safety features and the rapid response of the fire department and first responders, no one was injured. Nevertheless, the resulting property damage presents our team with major technical and financial challenges.

ElliE contains not only high-quality components but, above all, thousands of hours of volunteer development and manufacturing work. The fire therefore caused not only significant material damage but also the loss of a large portion of the work our team has poured in over the past year with great dedication and passion. Seeing our labor of love burn on the racetrack was an indescribable shock and a severe setback for us.

Nevertheless, we refuse to accept this setback as the end of our season. Our goal is to get ElliE back on the road and return to the track at the Formula Student Germany event at the Hockenheimring.
