I am a single parent and middle school teacher living in Southern Maryland, supporting my family on a single income. Every weekday, I commute from Waldorf to Arlington, VA—a journey that takes over three hours round trip—so my child can finish elementary school in one place while being close to family. My child is neurodiverse, and keeping their learning environment stable is very important to me, even though it means a long and exhausting commute.

On May 4th, our only vehicle was totaled in a hit and run accident on 295 late at night. Thankfully, we are safe, but the loss of our car has left us in a difficult position. While insurance and GAP coverage will pay off the loan on the totaled vehicle, I am left with no savings to put toward a down payment on another car or to buy a more affordable vehicle outright. With the rising costs of gas, insurance, and everyday expenses, this setback has put a real strain on our family.
