Hi ... we are Huxley, Celina and Lucinda and for the first time in Australia, the 3 of us (who happen to have Trisomy21/Down syndrome) are all heading to school in 2022 in the same class! We are beyond excited and have been working very hard behind the scenes with our families, therapists and our wonderful teachers and principal at our new school, St Bernard State School on Tamborine Mountain, QLD, Australia.
We are raising money to buy some much needed equipment for our classroom to help make our learning journey easier. Unfortunately there is a shortage of funds in the QLD Education Department and a small equipment hire pool, which is why we have decided to start this fundraiser to help our school with some much needed funding. We need a Roger Soundfield System (cost around $2000) to help amplify the teacher's voice above the classroom noise - and this will benefit the class as a whole. There are also some other items of equipment that we need around toileting supports and furniture in the classroom to help support us posturally as our muscles tire quicker than our typically developing peers.
Our families and our new school believe in our right to attend mainstream school and evidence shows that we will perform and learn better alongside our typically developing peers. As inclusive members of our local school, we will forge relationships that then carry on as we grow, so we will also become inclusive, contributing and valued members of our wonderful community on Tamborine Mountain.
Please help us reach our goal to make a positive difference in our classroom and support our learning journey!
Every person with Down syndrome is an individual. Just like everyone else they will have different things they are good at and other things that they find harder. People with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes in their cells (most people are deficient and only have 46 ... sorry people) They have an extra chromosome 21, which is why Down syndrome is also sometimes known as trisomy 21.
People with Down syndrome may have:
-areas of strengths and other areas where they need more support, just like everyone else in the community
-some level of intellectual disability
-some characteristic physical features
-increased risk of some health conditions (many of which are treatable)
-some developmental delays
