We are reaching out to our community to help us get a service dog for Rhett. As many of you know, a service dog is a large commitment in both time and finances, but it’s one that will make a life-changing difference for our family. We have chosen a trainer and a breeder, and we are ready to begin this journey. The initial costs for the dog and her first round of training are significant, and we are hoping to raise enough to cover this first big step.
Rhett faces unique sensory challenges that can make daily life unpredictable and sometimes unsafe. The service dog will be trained to help with safety and elopement by providing anchor and tether work—bracing against sudden bolting, stopping when Rhett stops, and providing resistance if he tries to run. She will also be trained to block, creating a physical barrier between Rhett and potential dangers like doors or driveways. If Rhett ever wanders, the dog will be able to track and find him, and alert us if he is distressed or leaves certain areas, even at night.
Beyond safety, the service dog will offer sensory support, helping Rhett focus on her instead of an overwhelming environment, providing a calming presence, and even assisting with sleep routines through deep pressure. This support will help Rhett learn, grow, and stay safe as he gets older and more independent.
If you would like to be part of Rhett’s service dog journey, we would be so grateful. Your donation will help us get started, and we look forward to keeping you updated on how the journey is going. Thank you for considering supporting Rhett and our family.
