Hi, my name is Sierra and I’m raising funds to help our family purchase a wheelchair-accessible van so we can safely transport our son to his essential medical appointments and therapies.

Our son Leo is 12 years old. He has seizures, cerebral palsy, vision impairment can’t walk talk sit use his hands etc. he also has a rare genetic disorder called SCN8A. He is the most beautiful and sweetest boy. He’s been through so much and honestly he can’t catch a break. Recently he underwent major spinal surgery and got his entire back fused. He is growing quickly and is now too tall and heavy for us to safely lift and transfer him into our current van. I have to have help putting him in and out the van we have and that won’t work long term. Since his surgery, it has become clear that continuing to transport him this way puts him—and us—at risk of injury. His wheelchair is now the safest way for him to travel.

Wheelchair-accessible vans are extremely expensive. While Regional Services can help pay for the wheelchair conversion portion, they do not cover the cost of the vehicle itself. In order for them to provide this assistance, the van must meet strict requirements, including being less than 3 years old and under 30,000 miles. Vans that meet these criteria typically cost $40,000 or more. We are able to trade in our current van to help offset some of the cost, but we are still left with a large financial gap.

In addition to caring for our son, we are also raising twin 2.5-year-olds, which adds to the daily demands on our family. We are doing everything we can, but this is a need we simply cannot meet on our own.
