Help Us Find Answers and Healing for Our Sweet Girl, Pickles

Donation protected
Our sweet pup Pickles has been through so much over the past month, and we’re heartbroken watching her go through this with so many unknowns still ahead. What started as what we thought was a simple sting or allergic reaction has turned into a complex and emotionally draining journey of vet visits, testing, and worry — and we still don’t have a clear diagnosis or treatment plan.

A few weeks ago, Pickles developed swelling under her right eye after a swim in the pool. We rushed her to the vet, where they suspected a bee sting and sent us home with antihistamines. But her eye continued to worsen — producing discharge and discomfort — so we were back at the vet again. She had an eye exam and was prescribed drops and eye lubricant.

Just days later, we noticed what looked like a bump on the side of her head. The vet determined it wasn’t a bump at all, but a sign of muscle loss: her cheekbone was becoming visible because the muscles on the right side of her head were shrinking. That’s when things became even more concerning.

We tested for Masticatory Muscle Myositis (MMM), a rare autoimmune disease. Pickles was put on steroids and antibiotics while we waited. The test came back negative — which was both a relief and a new kind of fear, because it left us with more questions and no clear path forward.

From there, we were referred to a neurologist. After more exams, Pickles underwent an MRI and a spinal tap. The MRI showed inflammation in her trigeminal nerve, a major facial nerve. The spinal tap ruled out leukemia and confirmed inflammation — but the underlying cause (cancer, infection, or something else) is still unknown.

Now we're waiting on yet another blood test to determine if an infection may be at the root of all this. Meanwhile, we’ve watched Pickles grow more docile and less playful with her brother. It’s devastating to see such a happy, energetic girl slow down without answers.

Through all of this, the vet bills have grown significantly, and we still don’t know how many more tests, visits, or treatments will be needed. We are doing everything we can to care for Pickles and get her the help she needs, but we are asking for support to make that possible.

Any donation — no matter the size — would mean the world to us and would go directly toward her medical costs. If you’re unable to give, sharing this campaign with others is also a huge help.

We are so grateful for any kindness you can offer as we fight to find answers and healing for Pickles. She’s family, and we just want to give her the best chance at a full and happy life.

With love and gratitude,
Eric and Frances
