My partner and I are two disabled nonbinary people trying to move from rural PA to escape poverty and avoid homelessness.
I moved to NE PA from Westchester in August while I was with my now ex-wife. Long story short, she returned to New York and abandoned me here to figure out life in a state and town where I knew no one. That didn't work out well and my savings have been wiped out between moving to PA and divorce costs (including traveling back to New York to finalize the details of the divorce). I don't have enough to cover next month's rent here and can't find a job because I was born and raised in New York City, so I don't know how to drive. Everything here requires you to drive. The original plan was that my ex, a licensed driver, would teach me how to drive, but she left me here before I could even get my permit.
My partner is currently fighting to get disability; as most people know, that is a long and difficult argument with the Social Security Administration. They moved here with me when the people they were living with could no longer afford their house and sold it. I used the very last of what savings I had to make sure they didn't go homeless.
Now we're on that precipice again.
We are looking to move to Baltimore, Maryland, where we have friends and a supportive community. We are asking for help with start-up funds to secure housing, food, and other necessities so we can restart our lives in a new city and state. This will give us the ability to look after each other until we can find jobs and get back on our feet. We will use the money to secure housing and to pay moving costs, and then live off of what's left as we job hunt.
We are starting with a bare minimum "don't starve" goal and will adjust our goal upwards if and when we meet it, or as we incur new expenses.
If you can support us, we are grateful, and if you can't financially support us, just sharing this fundraiser would be really helpful. Thank you for reading!
