Every child deserves to feel safe, understood, and accepted. But for my 9-year-old daughter, Emmy, the world can often feel like an overwhelming and dangerous place.

Em has autism. While she is bright, loving, and full of life, she faces daily challenges with sensory overload, anxiety, and navigating social nuances that most of us take for granted. Females on the spectrum mask to fit in and crave social interaction. However, they cannot immediately recognize negative behavior from others. Often it hits an escalation point when social strategies she has learned do not work with other children unwilling to listen or compromise during playtime.
For a long time, we focused on helping her navigate the world, but recently, we realized we need to help the world be safer for her.

The Urgent Need for Protection
Recently, Em has been the target of increasing bullying and harassment. As a mother, there is no greater pain than knowing your child is being targeted and feeling helpless to stop it when you aren't there. The situation escalated to the point where we had to involve authorities, but the fear remains. Emsley needs a constant presence that says, "She is not alone."
Her age at this time is when her differences will stand out more than they have in the past.

Enter Gelato: The 4-Legged Shield
We have found the perfect match in Gelato, a standard Poodle with the temperament to be Em’s anchor. But for a dog like Gelato to truly keep her safe, he needs extensive, specialized professional training. The service dog breeder allowed us to take Gelato home for a weekend to experience the benefit a service dog would bring to Em’s life. The trial was a success, but the timing was not right due to funding/training needs that have to happen right away.

We are raising $30,000 to train Gelato’s sibling not just as a companion, but as a fully certified Service Dog with a focus on protection and boundary control.

What Gelato’s Sibling Will Do
Your donation will fund specialized task training that goes far beyond standard obedience. Gelato’s sibling will be trained to:

• Guard Against Bullying: Gelato will be trained to recognize predatory behavior and create a physical barrier between Emsley and anyone making her uncomfortable.

• Create Safe Boundaries: By using "Blocking" and "Cover" commands, the dog will stand in front of or behind Emsley in crowded or hostile situations, preventing others from getting too close.

• Disrupt Distress: If Em is being harassed or her anxiety spikes, our dog will detect this change and interrupt the situation, giving her a valid reason to leave the interaction immediately.

• Prevent Wandering: In moments of panic, Em may try to bolt. Our dog will act as a physical anchor to keep her from running into traffic or unsafe areas.

• Provide Sensory Grounding: During meltdowns or sensory overload, the dog will use deep pressure therapy to calm Em’s nervous system, helping her regain control.

• Block, disrupt, and redirect self-harming behaviors.

Why We Need Your Help
Service dog training of this caliber is specialized and expensive. It requires hundreds of hours of professional work to ensure the service dog is reliable in every situation. We cannot put a price on Emmy’s safety, but the cost is substantial.
By donating, you aren't just helping us train a dog. You are giving a vulnerable little girl her confidence back. You are giving her a guardian who will watch over her when we can't. You are giving Emmy the chance to exist in the world without fear.

Please help us bring Gelato’s sibling home and turn them into the protector Emmy so desperately needs.
With gratitude,
Melinda Blackham
