Birth happened within a web of support, with grandmothers, aunties, and midwives ensuring the mother had everything she needed. But today? We no longer have these women to guide us. In our modern world, we must seek out and pay for this support ourselves. Without a village of experienced women to guide us, we need to hire traditional midwives (different from medical midwives) and doulas to help us navigate this journey—support that is not covered by health care or insurance.

This is our reality. By choosing the birth that aligns with our values—one where we are not just passive patients but active participants—we have stepped outside what insurance covers. Every essential part of this journey—from birth attendant, doula support, home birth setup, to postpartum recovery—must be paid out-of-pocket. This is why we need your help.

Why This Matters: The First Months Shape a Lifetime

The first three months of a baby's life—which includes the "fourth trimester" (ie. the first forty days)—are not just about survival. They shape the child's entire future. As The Evolved Nest and The Continuum Concept explain, a newborn's nervous system is wired for constant closeness, touch, and immediate response from caregivers. In cultures that maintain these ancient ways, babies cry less, experience less stress, and grow into more confident, secure adults.

A newborn’s greatest need is not just milk—it is human presence. The presence of a fully available mother. The presence of a calm, supported father. The presence of a community that says, "You are safe. You are loved."

But presence requires time. And time, in today’s world, costs money.

In order for Miranda to be fully present for our child, she needs time to rest, bond, and heal without the pressure of returning to work too soon.

For Kyle to be fully present, he needs relief from the intense weight of financial stress—so he can be there, supporting both mother and baby without feeling torn between providing and being present.

In The Continuum Concept, Jean Liedloff describes how in many traditional cultures, birth and infancy happen in the arms of the community. Babies are carried constantly, experiencing the world through the movements of their mother’s daily life. There is no harsh transition from womb to isolation—only continuity.

But in modern Western society, this fundamental need for connection has been disrupted. Mothers are expected to "bounce back." Fathers are expected to return to work immediately. The support structures that once surrounded birth no longer exist—unless we actively rebuild them.
