Scruffys Angels was originally founded in 2016 to simply act as a lost and found group for dogs within our local community, and I myself joined in 2018 after my love of animals pulled me from rock bottom with my mental health and provided me a focus and purpose, that purpose is to give any animal in need a voice and to help them when others fail or intentionally mistreat them. Since we began we have increased massively in both the amount of jobs we take on and the complexity of them, and upon joining Scruffys highlighted the need for cats to also be included, and in 2023 took over full responsibility for the rescue. Although myself and my team are volunteers who do this, funded solely by donations from supporters and many times our own pockets, alongside our day to day lives and whilst being present for our families we no longer simply act as a lost and found group. We have become the point of contact for members of the public who either don’t know where or who to turn to, often after larger more well known and funded organisations can’t/won’t step up.
We pride ourselves on never turning away an animal in need no matter how bleak the situation, many times going out to a call not knowing what we are going to be met with, nor knowing whether or not we’ll be able to find a foster in time to avoid an animal being left on the street or sent to the borough warden, or the funds to be able to provide urgent veterinary treatment which is so often needed The emotional toll this takes on myself and the team is immense however we cannot and will not give up as long as there are animals that need us, without us they have no one.
What will stop us however is the increasing costs we’ve accumulated in the pursuit of treating these forgotten and discarded animals, we currently have an amazing set of Vets whom without their help we wouldn’t have been able to save anywhere near as many as we have…we are now on the brink of having to close our doors due to our current balance owing standing at over £11,000 which is only going to continue to grow as we have a number of cats already in our care booked for procedures that are urgently needed and not yet included in this amount.
Whilst I have a dedicated fundraising team that go above and beyond to raise funds, via boot sales, quiz and bingo nights and we do recoup some costs from adoption fees most times this barely if at all, covers the price of neutering and microchipping, let alone food, litter, flea and worm treatments, the transport costs for getting these babies to any appointments and other consumables needed.
I fully appreciate times are hard for everyone right now but once again I need to make a plea for your help to clear this balance so we can carry on providing this desperately needed service for our community, we appreciate every penny donated and pray that we can raise enough to get out of this financial hole.
Here you can see some of our rescues, some of who are now free from pain over the bridge as the kindest thing to do was to love them in their final hours/days, our success stories, feedback from members of the public we have helped, and most importantly the job that we want to continue to do but which we can only do with your help.
