Recovery and support for my big brother

“He is going to walk” is what my brother muttered after days of being hooked up to beeping machines and finally regaining consciousness. “What do you mean?” I said shocked that he was aware after many uncertain days fighting for his life. He responded, “They won’t catch him. He will get away with it.”

Only a few days prior I received a call from my grandma. She told me that my mother was rushing to the hospital and that it was very bad. I remained calm, “Okay, we are on our way…” My other brother and I were praying the entire drive to the hospital that God would save his life. We walk into the room seeing tubes, drains, and all sorts of equipment leading to one almost unrecognizable body. Someone had tried to murder my big brother - and they’ve gotten away with it.

It's been over 130 days since a disturbed individual tried to take my brother's life without reason. My brother was sitting on the stairs of his home enjoying the evening, when a man approached him on the side walk saying, “I’m having a bad day” and left him battered and bleeding out on the street, only ceasing his blows because my brother had lost consciousness. That man is still walking just as my brother said when he woke up from the brink of death. For a long time we had to pretend my brother had died, as the detective said if the offender catches wind that my brother has a family that is looking out for him he could spook and flee. The detectives have given up on his case. They simply are too spread thin in my city and violent offenders are not taken seriously. They’ve told us they have tried everything they can. Now on behalf of my family I ask for your help.

After numerous surgeries and tests, doctors confirmed his recovery will be long. He still faces plastic surgery, dental work, and bone reconstruction. Both physical and mental therapy. Worse, he already battles a life threatening mutation: type II vitamin deficient rickets, which leaves him fragile and ill making him the only person in the world with this condition. Yet, growing up, nothing ever stopped him. He loved skateboarding, and you'd never know about the ports pumping into his heart or the sickness after each injection. He defied death again and again. His first puppy, Bella, was his light, and now it’s Stella who brings him joy. But last night, his words from weeks ago echoed in my mind: "Why would God allow this? I don’t want to live anymore." He said it casually, rolling over in pain as he tried to sleep still hurting from the organs they removed.
