Help Us Care For Mom – Aurora Hanlon

Thank you for taking the time to read our story.

On May 18, 2020, my mom, Aurora Halon, was visiting me in California and we were talking in the kitchen when she suddenly grabbed her head in extreme pain and said, “Help me!”.  She started feeling nauseous and sweating profusely.  I immediately called 911.  The paramedics took her vitals and were not able to find anything wrong with her and assumed she suffered from a migraine headache.  Due to her age and COVID-19, they did not recommend going to the ER.  I then moved my mom over to the couch to rest and put an ice pack on her head. I kept a close eye on her and was trying to be quiet so that she could sleep and recover from her migraine.  A little while later, I noticed she was going to get sick and was not sitting upright to protect her airway and asked her to sit up. By then, she was not responsive. I tried to get her to respond by shaking her and talking to her, but she was unconscious, so I called 911 again.  This time, they took her to the ER.

At the hospital, we discovered she had a brain aneurysm call a Subarachnoid hemorrhage. She immediately went into surgery where they placed a drain and then coils in her head to relieve the pressure and stop the bleeding. The next day she had another surgery to remove the excess blood from her brain. After a week in the hospital, it was a miracle she was responding to commands.  When asked, she would put up two fingers, thumbs up, she knew where she was and what month it was.  It was amazing.  Then she contracted meningitis, pneumonia and started having heart failure, which put her back in an unconscious state.

Because of COVID-19, we were not allowed to visit her in the hospital.  After being in the ICU for a month, the doctor said that there was nothing more they could do for her and that she would have to go into a nursing home. After much discussion in our family we decided to drive her 35 hours cross country from California to Georgia, so that she could be with family and we could take care of her at home.

My Mom needs around the clock care and therapy. We need to move her every two hours and feed her every eight hours through a feeding tube. The great news is that on 7/18/2020 (2 months after the aneurysm, meningitis, pneumonia and heart failure), she opened her eyes and faintly said “I love you”.   After two months of being unconscious she is now able to respond to commands by showing us a thumbs up, 2 fingers and waves to us on command. When I asked her to put up two fingers the first time, she just started laughing at me and chuckled.  Her personality was shining through.  It was amazing!  Even more amazing is when I handed her rosary beads, she started kissing them and made the sign of the cross, which just blew us away.

She has a long road to recovery and needs our emotional and financial support, which is why I started this go fund me.  It is difficult for us to ask for help, but we know we will not be able to sustain the financial hardship.  The money will be used to cover out of pocket medical expenses as well as her continued 24 hour, 7 days a week care she requires in the comfort of her home.

If you know my mom, then you know what a loving, caring person she is - always doing for others and never thinking of herself. I want to make sure she has a chance for a full recovery at home with her family.

We appreciate any help you can give.  No donation is too small.  We truly thank you from the bottom of our heart.
