HELP US CARE FOR THE HORSES OF GUANACASTE, COSTA RICA

When people see a horse in our front yard, the first question we’re always asked is, “Were you horse people before moving to Costa Rica?” And our answer is, “No.” But all it took was one little horse to change everything.

MEET SPARK

Our story began unexpectedly. A young horse – thin, alone, and limping – began visiting our house. He followed us on beach walks, quietly seeking safety and companionship. We learned he was part of a semi-feral herd in Guanacaste. Though technically owned, these horses are often left to fend for themselves – roaming the streets, drinking from puddles, and foraging for scraps during the dry season.

Spark’s mother had rejected him after becoming pregnant again too soon, and the herd had followed her lead. He was left injured, malnourished, and completely alone.

One day he tried crossing a river and got stuck for hours causing major injuries. After this, I seeked out the owners and purchased Spark. I told my husband (with fingers crossed behind my back) that we would temporarily take him in. Within a week, he almost died of colic and malnourishment. A kind-hearted vet helped stabilize him, and with round-the-clock care, Spark pulled through.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Spark became our “yard horse" and completely stole our hearts. And then, something beautiful happened – the herd began visiting him too. One by one, they stopped by – looking for food, water, or maybe just a little love.

Before long, we were loading up our golf cart with buckets and grain, making our twice daily rounds through town. We got to know the local families who owned these horses – descendants of the original Guanacaste settlers. They deeply love their animals, but many don’t have the resources for proper food, water, or medical care.

Eventually, we secured a small rental property nearby – about 3 acres – where Spark and his herd could be safe from cars, streets, and harm. We now care for up to a dozen horses at a time. But our hearts are bigger than our budget.

WHY WE NEED HELP

These horses are facing increasing danger:

*Many are malnourished during the dry season, with no green grass or water

*Ticks cover their bodies, spreading disease and infection

*Several have been involved in car and motorcycle accidents

*Two horses have been slashed with machetes for wandering into the wrong yard

*Mares are constantly pregnant, often by their own offspring, repeating the cycle of suffering

This isn’t neglect – it’s a lack of resources. We’ve chosen to step in – to be of service to these animals.

ANNUAL GOAL:

SPONSOR 10 HORSES ($3,500/HORSE/YEAR)

IMMEDIATE NEEDS

$5 = 2 kg/ 4.5 lbs of carrots for sweet treats

 $25 = 4 Bales of hay

$45 = 1 Bag of grain

 $125 = One month of food (grain, hay, carrots) for one horse

$3,500 = Sponsors a horse for a full year – you can name them, receive photo updates, and even visit your horse here in paradise

FUTURE NEEDS

As we grow, we will need to raise money for improvements to the Ranch:

-Partitions to separate the herds to prevent fighting but allow them to feel companionship

-Shaded pole barns

-Sunshades to minimize the 90+ degree heat

-Individual feeding stations to prevent fighting/injury

-Gas pump for the well for watering the horses

-Tools such as wheelbarrow and shovels for daily clean ups

-Harnesses/Leads/Ropes for training and walking

AYÚDANOS A CUIDAR LOS CABALLOS DE GUANACASTE, COSTA RICA

Cuando la gente ve un caballo en nuestro patio delantero, la primera pregunta que siempre nos hacen es: "¿Eras gente de caballos antes de mudarte a Costa Rica?" Y nuestra respuesta es: "No". Pero todo lo que se nequiró fue un caballito para cambiarlo todo.

CONOCE A SPARK

Nuestra historia comenzó inesperadamente. Un caballo joven, delgado, solo y cojeando, comenzó a visitar nuestra casa. Nos siguió en los paseos por la playa, buscando en silencio seguridad y compañía. Nos enteramos de que era parte de una rebada semi-salvaje en Guanacaste. Aunque técnicamente son de propiedad, estos caballos a menudo se les deja por sí mismos, deambulando por las calles, bebiendo de charcos y reando para los restos durante la estación seca.

La madre de Spark lo había rechazado después de quedar embarazada de nuevo demasiado pronto, y la manada había seguido su ejemplo. Se quedó herido, desnutrido y completamente solo.

Un día intentó cruzar un río y se quedó atascado durante horas causando heridas graves. Después de esto, buscé a los propietarios y compré Spark. Le dije a mi marido (con los dedos cruzados a mis espaldas) que lo acogeríamos temporalmente. En una semana, casi muere de cólicos y desnutrición. Un veterinario de buen corazón lo ayudó a estabilizarlo, y con atención las 24 horas del día, Spark salió adelante.

LO QUE PASÓ DESPUÉS LO CAMBIÓ TODO

Spark se convirtió en nuestro "caballo de patio" y robó completamente nuestros corazones. Y entonces, sucedió algo hermoso: la rebaña comenzó a visitarlo también. Uno por uno, se detuvieron, buscando comida, agua o tal vez solo un poco de amor.

En poco tiempo, estábamos cargando nuestro carrito de golf con cubos y grano, haciendo nuestras rondas dos veces al día por la ciudad. Nos dimos a conocer a las familias locales que poseían estos caballos, descendientes de los colonos originales de Guanacaste. Aman profundamente a sus animales, pero muchos no tienen los recursos para la comida adecuada, el agua o la atención médica.

Finalmente, conseguimos una pequeña propiedad de alquiler cerca, unos 3 acres, donde Spark y su rebaño podrían estar a salvo de los coches, las calles y los daños. Ahora cuidamos hasta una docena de caballos a la vez. Pero nuestros corazones son más grandes que nuestro presupuesto.

POR QUÉ NECESITAMOS AYUDA

Estos caballos se enfrentan a un peligro creciente:

*Muchos están desnutridos durante la estación seca, sin hierba verde ni agua

*Las tarrapatas cubren sus cuerpos, propagando enfermedades e infecciones

*Varios han estado involucrados en accidentes de automóviles y motocicletas

*Dos caballos han sido cortados con machetes por deambular por el patio equivocado

*Las yeñas están constantemente embarazadas, a menudo por su propia descendencia, repitiendo el ciclo del sufrimiento

Esto no es negligencia, es una falta de recursos. Hemos elegido intervenir, para estar al servicio de estos animales.

A medida que crezcamos, necesitaremos recaudar dinero para mejoras en el Rancho:

-Particiones para separar las manadas para evitar peleas, pero permitirles sentir compañía

-Graneros de postes sombreados

-Sombrillas para minimizar el calor de más de 90 grados

-Estaciones de alimentación individuales para evitar peleas/lesiones

-Pomba de gasolina para el pozo para regar a los caballos

-Herramientas como carretillas y palas para limpiezas diarias

-Arneses/Plomas/cuerdas para entrenar y caminar

NUESTRO SUEÑO

Queremos ver un Guanacaste donde todos los caballos estén cuidados, protegidos y seguros, no solo de las calles, sino del tranquilo sufrimiento del hambre y la negligencia. Spark es la prueba de que esto es posible. Con tu ayuda, podemos extender este amor a muchos más.
