Help us build the Phoenix Freedom Academy

Greetings!

I am an educator for nearly 20 plus years looking to build a micro school for students with disabilities here in Orlando, Florida.

If you know me, then you know my story:
  • I've been an educator since 2003, and special educator since 2006
  • In 2006, I earned my Masters of Education in Special education and in 2013, I earned my Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction.
  • I am also a certified reading teacher, special educator for Ages 3-21 in five states, and earned the ESOL endorsement in Maryland.
  • I've worked with and have experienced academic, socio-emotional, and behavioral success with students of all ages and disabilities including autism, learning disabled, emotionally disabled, and intellectually disabled
  • I've been a strong advocate for parents rights and have tirelessly supported their efforts while working in the Maryland Public education and the District of Columbia Public schools
  • I transitioned from being a teacher to behavioral analysis. I am in the final stages of becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst so that I can provide ABA services to all families--not just those that can afford my support via their personal funds.

Since August 2020, I have transitioned to providing greater direct support to students with disabilities and their families through educational consultation, Autism Waiver, and private pay (pro bono) services. During this transition my family and I moved to Florida which has opened a door I previously thought to be unlikely-- developing our own school. In Florida, school choice has evolved beyond corporations and the traditional school districts--certified and licensed educators are able to start their own schools and be recognized by the state for funding.

Of course, this means money is necessary for a place, possible renovations, curriculum, instructional and intervention materials and supplies. Our goal is to be able to meet most needs for our students and limit obstacles to their success--by providing a curriculum that piques their interests, instruction that is individualized to meet their needs, and wrap around services to limit distractions and provide at home support. The following highlights some of our educational approaches:
1. STEAM and experiential learning focus (taking the hands on, real world, yet science/art approach to learning)
2. Behavior modification using ABA--scientifically based and research backed approach to teach replacement behaviors

So I am asking for you to help us so that we can help others--Please go to our website to view our presentation on our philosophy and our upcoming plans. We want to open our doors in Fall 2024 to no more than 2 groups of students--those in grades 3-5, and a group of students in grades 6-8.

Over the last 20 years, we have graciously poured into many communities--from Ohio to Florida, in Washington state, Pennsylvania, Texas, and of course the DMV. Now we are asking for your support so that we can accomplish our dream of building a school that will help others open the doors to their dream of independence.
