Help us build our off-grid camp in the Pyrénées

Hello! We are Alex Roxburgh & Alex Cheval.

Four years ago, we moved to a remote part of the French Pyrenees to follow our dream of buying land to start an off-grid eco camp. Shortly after arriving, we purchased 1 hectare of partly forested land, nestled in the mountains at 1000m altitude in the Ariège region of this wild National Park. Our local village, Massat, is very remote and has a rich history of simplified back-to-nature living.

Purchasing the land in 2020 was a big milestone for us, yet the pandemic hit our industries hard and as many businesses shuttered temporarily and budgets tightened, we ended up living off our own personal funds, and so our project was put on hold.

After spending time integrating into our new community and learning the way of life here in the Massat Valley, we now have all the resources to begin our project, yet we need a financial boost to continue work & launch ‘Camp Bascous’.

THE PROJECT

By starting with the first structure made from local and natural materials, we can being to welcome a community of like-minded folks, grow our off-grid camp, start restoration work on our old stone barn and cultivate the land to become ecologically functional. We hope to evolve into a playground where our future visitors can merge with the healing powers of nature and are inspired by lifestyle in tune with natural rhythms.

The brand 'Bascousland' will aim to guide others to explore sustainable lifestyles which foster our human connection to the earth, inspiring guests to strengthen the web of nature connection and contribute to the growing international circuit of eco-friendly living and abundance. Further down the road will come a village community general store and the cultivation of a market permaculture garden to help bring locally grown food to the valley.

With your kind contributions, we can:

• Order a 22sq meter cabin tent crafted by local tent maker Jenny at ‘Fait en Dessin’ right here in Massat

• Have plans for the tent frame and outbuildings drawn up and finalised by local eco-architect James Kirk

• Purchase wood & supplies to begin building and restoring the stonemasonry on the grange with local contractor Anao Maisonnier

• Purchase a quality portable wood burner stove for the tent

• Purchase 2 solar panels, a rainwater harvesting tank & develop a solar-heated plumbing system

• Build & outfit the small kitchen & bathroom/ shower cabins

• Purchase the surrounding land from our neighbour

For donations over €300, we will plant a tree in your name to further encourage biodiversity on Les Bascous.

We started a website to help bring the brand to life and to serve as a little taster of what's to come! With Camp Bascous, we not only can support a network of creators here in the valley, but utilize our combined skills (30 years of combined service industry experience, small business management, gourmet cooking, design & photography).

While the project grows, we will still be working our regular jobs as a photographer and head chef at local restaurant, Espies Gourmand.

Bonjour ! Nous sommes Alex Roxburgh et Alex Cheval.

Il y a quatre ans, nous avons déménagé dans une partie reculée des Pyrénées françaises pour réaliser notre rêve d'acheter un terrain afin de créer un camp écologique hors réseau. Peu après notre arrivée, nous avons acheté un hectare de terrain partiellement boisé, niché dans les montagnes à 1000 mètres d'altitude dans la région de l'Ariège de ce parc national sauvage. Notre village local, Massat, est très isolé et a une riche histoire de retour simplifié à la nature.

L'achat du terrain en 2020 a été une étape importante pour nous, mais la pandémie a frappé durement nos industries et, comme de nombreuses entreprises ont fermé temporairement et que les budgets se sont resserrés, nous avons fini par vivre de nos propres fonds personnels, et notre projet a donc été mis en suspens.

Après avoir passé du temps à nous intégrer dans notre nouvelle communauté et à apprendre le mode de vie de la vallée de Massat, nous disposons désormais de toutes les ressources nécessaires pour lancer notre projet, mais nous avons besoin d'un coup de pouce financier pour poursuivre le travail et lancer le "Camp Bascous".

LE PROJET

En commençant par la première structure fabriquée à partir de matériaux locaux et naturels, nous pouvons être en mesure d'accueillir une communauté de personnes partageant les mêmes idées, de développer notre camp hors réseau, de commencer les travaux de restauration de notre vieille grange en pierre et de cultiver la terre pour qu'elle devienne écologiquement fonctionnelle. Nous espérons évoluer vers un terrain de jeu où nos futurs visiteurs pourront fusionner avec les pouvoirs de guérison de la nature et être inspirés par un mode de vie en phase avec les rythmes naturels.

La marque "Bascousland" aura pour but de guider les autres dans l'exploration de modes de vie durables qui favorisent notre lien humain avec la terre, en inspirant les visiteurs à renforcer le réseau de connexion avec la nature et à contribuer au circuit international croissant de la vie écologique et de l'abondance. Plus loin sur la route, on trouvera un magasin général pour la communauté villageoise et un jardin maraîcher en permaculture qui permettra d'apporter à la vallée des produits alimentaires cultivés localement.

Grâce à vos contributions, nous pourrons

- Commander une tente-cabane de 22 mètres carrés fabriquée par Jenny, la tanneuse locale de "Fait en Dessin", ici même à Massat.

- Faire dessiner et finaliser les plans de l'armature de la tente et des dépendances par l'éco-architecte local James Kirk.

- Acheter du bois et des fournitures pour commencer à construire et à restaurer la maçonnerie de la grange avec l'entrepreneur local Anao Maisonnier.

- Achat d'un poêle à bois portable de qualité pour la tente

- Achat de 2 panneaux solaires, d'un réservoir de récupération d'eau de pluie et développement d'un système de plomberie chauffée à l'énergie solaire.

- Construire et équiper la petite cuisine et les cabines de bain/douche.

- Acheter le terrain environnant à notre voisin

Pour tout don supérieur à 300 €, nous planterons un arbre à votre nom afin d'encourager la biodiversité sur les Bascous.

À nous deux, nous avons passé près de 15 ans à faire des recherches et à prendre de l'élan pour lancer cette entreprise de rêve.
