A Safe Place When There Is Nowhere Else to Go
On the coldest nights in Northern New Jersey, when the wind cuts through alleyways and temperatures drop below freezing, there are cats who have nowhere to hide.
Tiny kittens curled beneath cars, elderly cats with aching joints shivering on concrete, sick and injured cats whose bodies are already fighting to survive—these are the calls that never stop coming. And far too often, we have to say the words that break us every time:
“We’re so sorry… we don’t have space.”
At North Jersey Kitty Committee, we say yes whenever we possibly can. We trap, we rescue, we foster, we bottle-feed, we fund surgeries, and we hold the hands (and paws) of cats who have been failed time and time again. We do this not because it’s easy—but because someone has to.
But the truth is heartbreaking:
Every rescue in our area is beyond full. Foster homes are overflowing. Emergency placements no longer exist. And winter doesn’t wait.
We have watched cats deteriorate in the cold because there was simply nowhere safe to put them. We have taken in kittens already hypothermic. We have rushed elderly cats to the vet knowing that the only reason they survived long enough to get there was pure luck.
And luck should never be the deciding factor.
That is why we are launching the most important mission we have ever taken on.
A Sanctuary. A Lifeline. A Second Chance.
We are raising $250,000 to open a cat sanctuary in Northern New Jersey—a permanent, safe haven for the cats who have nowhere else to go.
This sanctuary will be:
• A warm, secure refuge during brutal winter months
• A place for sick, injured, and elderly cats to heal
• Emergency shelter for kittens pulled from the cold
• Overflow space when rescues and fosters are full
• A stepping stone toward adoption—or a forever home for those who need lifetime care
This will not be a warehouse. This will not be a temporary fix.
This will be a place where cats are warm. Where they are fed. Where they are treated with dignity. Where they are no longer invisible.
Why $250,000 Matters
This funding will allow us to:
• Secure or build a suitable property
• Create climate-controlled indoor spaces
• Install proper quarantine and medical areas
• Provide long-term care for vulnerable cats
• Ensure sustainability so we can say yes when others cannot
Every dollar brings us closer to a future where no cat is left freezing simply because the system is overwhelmed.
Why We’re Asking Now
Because winter doesn’t give extensions.
Because kittens are still being born outside.
Because elderly cats don’t survive another season on the streets.
Because “we’re full” is not a solution.
We know this is a big goal. But we also know what happens when a community comes together for those who cannot ask for help themselves.
If you’ve ever loved a cat…
If you’ve ever felt the warmth of a purring body in your arms…
If you’ve ever believed that compassion should be louder than indifference…
Please stand with us.
Help us build a sanctuary.
Help us save lives.
Help us give Northern New Jersey’s most vulnerable cats the second chance they deserve.
Together, we can make sure that when the next freezing night comes, there is finally a place to go.
