Help us build a library in Chipulukusu
Donation protected
I’m heading back out to Zambia this summer to work with some schools, getting them set up with and training them with computers and some other small projects. Some of you may know, some don’t; myself, my dad and some other friends and family have been working with schools in the communities around Ndola for quite a few years, supplying them with books and computers and working with them to develop literacy in the communities. We’ve also been working with small businesses, helping them get off the ground with training and small loans.
Zambia is an underdeveloped country with most people having little to no access to books. Lack of access to books and literacy have been our focus and we’ve set up two small libraries, using empty shipping containers which we initially used to ship books (over 20 tonnes in each) to Ndola. These have been hugely successful and demand for access to books is high.
Anyway, this year we have a fairly ambitious plan to build a large library in Chipulukusu in Ndola, Zambia, which would be completely open to the public. A local school has offered the land and schematics have been drawn; all we need now is to raise the funds to actually build it. A construction manager we know out there estimates the cost at €70,000. I’m trying to raise money to take a small chunk out of that, so I’m pestering all of you for any donation you can give towards the project.
In an effort to raise some funds, I will be solo climbing Weissmies in Switzerland this July. At over 4000m it’ll be a rough ride. I’m looking for some sponsorship and any donations would be greatly appreciated. I’d also like to note that not a cent of the money raised is going towards anything to do with the mountain climb, nor getting me out to Zambia.
On a side note: If anybody in Ireland has old laptops or large collections of old books to give away, please get on to me as they will be made use of out there.
Thank you very much in advance for any donations.
