Help us build a better world, more peaceful and fairer to all species

ANDA - Agência de Notícias de Direitos Animais (News Agency of Animal Rights) is a non-profit organization. It is the first in its segment and the one with the largest audience in Latin America. Our NGO exists to defend both animals and the planet with the power of a media vehicle committed to ethics, professionalism and seriousness, in addition to legal action, sometimes hitting the courts and conducting lawsuits in defense of animals and our planet.

From the animal rights and environmental protection’s perspective, we produce relevant, precise and qualified content as an invitation to reflection, to interaction and to taking action with an attitude of transformation, both individual and collective, towards the construction of a new society: more inclusive, solidary, ethical and peaceful regarding the inherent coexistence between species.

Foundation

ANDA was founded in November 2008 by the journalist and animal rights and conservation activist, Silvana Andrade. With a 35-year career and multiple experiences in the Brazilian press, she worked as reporter, production coordinator, editor, and editor-in-chief in TV networks (Cultura, Record, Manchete, Globo News) and video producers. She also worked as a journalist in private companies and government agencies.

Moreover, Silvana is responsible for creating the proposal of Bill 337/2006, which authorizes the State Government to create public veterinary hospitals in the State of São Paulo. Furthermore, she is a founding member of the Vegan Society in Brazil and a spokesperson in the field of Communication and Animal Rights.

Credibility

ANDA is well respected and has solid credibility with the press and the society at large. Besides, the agency has received support from dozens of celebrities.

"I am Marianne Thieme, president of the Animal Party in the Netherlands, and I support ANDA because I think it is important to spread news and articles about how animals are treated in our society, and about how we use our planet in the wrong way. People need access to all the arguments to build a more animal-friendly and compassionate world. Through ANDA, people can learn, meet and exchange knowledge on animalistic topics. Visit and participate in ANDA’s website."

"The compassion that is necessary for the animal cause is also important towards people. To me it was very important to have awakened to this topic, and to be part of something, and ANDA represents something very important in Brazil. It's an NGO that needs a lot of support. Therefore, I think much can be done from ANDA’s role of raising awareness to these critical subjects and getting people’s attention and comprehension. I hope that in the future we can move forward, and I believe we will. "

“Shining World Compassion Award” (2011)

On February 28, 2011, ANDA won the "Brilliant World Compassion Award", given by the Los Angeles-based Supreme Master TV, in recognition to the work done in the field of peace on the planet and the development of a fairer and more sustainable world.

"The award was granted because of the Agency's achievements in informing the world of the value of goodness towards all beings, and for the dedication and altruism of its members and associates. ANDA's focus is the global dissemination of information about the reality of injustice faced by animals today. For offering their time, intellect, nobility and energy to help animals in need, for the altruism and purity of their goals, for courageously speaking for those who cannot, and for the love and kindness present in all their work, we hereby applaud and celebrate the compassionate acts of ANDA," said Master Ching Hai, a Vietnamese humanitarian leader known worldwide for her work in favor of causes such as veganism, animal rights and the conservation of  the planet.

Lawsuits

ANDA also operates on the legal front, focusing on the protection of animal rights and conservation of natural world. Through dozens of lawsuits, we fight for banning the exportation of live animals from Brazil to other countries, for ending rodeos and “vaquejadas” (a cruel “sport” in Brazil that includes chasing an ox while riding a horse and trying to take it down by pulling its tail). The lawsuits also intend to put an end to animal auctions and to the exploitation of animals in transportation, pulling wagons or carriages commonly overweighted.

Moreover, we were able to secure the transfer of Black, a chimpanzee that was enslaved for years in a zoo, to the Santuário de Grandes Primatas (a sanctuary for primates). Another successful case was the release of the female elephant Bambi, sent to the Elephant Sanctuary of Brazil.

Currently, we are fighting for the release of the orangutan Samson, imprisoned since its birth, 35 years ago, and explored by the Zoo of São Paulo since 2007.

Pantanal Conservation Area and the Amazon Rainforest

We went to the courts to call for emergency actions by President Jair Bolsonaro regarding the wildfires that devastated Pantanal Conservation Area. We are conducting a vast journalistic coverage exposing the substantial dismantling of environmental policies that is being carried out in the country, along with the government's negligence in face of devastating fires in the Pantanal Conservation Area and in the Amazon Rainforest. One of our team members went to the Pantanal to help rescue animals and put out fires.

Recently ANDA filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court against Federal Government and the government of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul for omission in relation to the fires in the Pantanal.

Events

ANDA holds several events to publicize the animal cause, besides promoting lectures both in Brazil and abroad, in countries such as Canada, the United States and Luxembourg. We have already held photo, cartoons and illustrations exhibitions, as well as cycling tours, musicals, documentary premieres and three books debuts: Visão Abolicionista, Ética e Direitos Animais (Free translation: Abolitionist Vision, Ethics and Animal Rights) (2011), Educação Vegana (Free translation: Vegan Education) (2013) and Somos Todos Animais (Free translation: We are All Animals) (2015).

Persecution and Attacks

In July 2018, ANDA was severely attacked by hackers. The virtual aggressions began after ANDA published a series of articles exposing the presidential candidate (at the time), Jair Bolsonaro’s policies against animals and the environmental agenda, also the risks of pesticide use. Since then, the attacks have become frequent and each time more aggressive, reaching a point where they have completely destroyed the structure of our website, leaving us offline for months. The Agency’s social media accounts were also hacked and blocked.

Team members were physically threatened and also attacked with frivolous comments and accusations. Most haters accuse the NGO of being a criminal organization for advocating for compassion, veganism and a world free of violence against all species. We still receive hacker attacks on a daily basis, but with resilience, the ANDA team continues to work seven days a week courageously fighting for animal rights.

Why help ANDA

Thanks to the work and commitment of ANDA’s team, today there is a new culture regarding the treatment and consideration of animals in the press and throughout society. Several articles and reports produced by ANDA were directly responsible for changes in society and the development and implementation of more protective and inclusive public policies. We were also able to generate impact on internal procedures in many companies, that adapted into the new values that ANDA helped disseminate, but we want to do more.

With your help, we want to expand our activities to have global reach. Everything we collect will turn into investments in our website’s infrastructure, payment to our hardworking associates in communication, design and IT,  and in promoting events and creating informational materials to push the agenda of animal rights and conservation of the planet. Together, we can build a much better, fairer, freer, and more peaceful world for all species.
