"Repression" is a short film inspired by The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, set in modern-day Edinburgh. It follows Gabriel, a shy university student who represses his identity, desires, and anger to survive daily life. When he’s offered a mysterious substance that unlocks a more confident version of himself, Gabriel finally feels free. But that freedom comes at a cost. As his new persona grows bolder and more volatile, he risks hurting the people he cares about most.

The film explores themes of repression, queer identity, internalised fear, and the danger of mistaking confidence for authenticity. Repression asks what happens when self-acceptance is forced rather than earned, and whether becoming “stronger” is worth losing control of who you are.

This project matters to me because repression is often invisible. It doesn’t announce itself. It shows up in subtle ways, in how we hold ourselves, what we avoid, and what we tell ourselves we’re “fine” with. I wanted to make a film that treats that experience with care, restraint, and emotional truth rather than spectacle.

Repression is being made by a small, dedicated team of collaborators who believe in telling this story responsibly and thoughtfully. Every department, from cinematography to sound, is focused on intimacy and control, allowing the audience to sit with the characters rather than be pushed toward conclusions. This is a film that trusts stillness and trusts viewers to lean in.
