kaddish (how to be a sanctuary) written by Sam Sherman and directed by Lila Weitzner

/ˈkädiSH/
- a prayer of thanksgiving recited as part of the process for Jewish mourning
- the sanctification of God’s name
Hi y’all! Sam (actor/writer) & Lila (director/co-creator) here.
About a year ago, Sam approached Lila with the idea of using the journals and letters of his late grandfather Saul N. Sherman combined with his own writings to create a play. Six months ago, the time was right! We spent three weeks placing Sam and Saul into conversation across time with each other about facing fascism and growing up in turbulent times, all with the help of a mystical creature from Jewish folklore. We put the play up for an audience of 15 people in Lila’s apartment last December. Since then we have spent all of our free moments fine-tuning the script, researching, and bringing in our favorite artists to collaborate with us on turning this piece into a full production.
We are thrilled to announce that we are taking our new play to premiere ‘across the pond’ at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this coming August (8/1 — 8/9)! We are looking to our community and beyond to help support this project.
Your support will help cover:
- Compensation for the wonderful artists we are recruiting to join our team (lighting designer, sound designer, set designers, photographers, etc.)
- Festival registration fees and venue rental
- Flights and accommodations
We have been friends since we were six weeks old - working on this together has been a literal LIFE-long dream come true. This play asks us to learn from our ancestors as we face the challenges of our times. We’re excited to share our process with you as we bring this piece from Lila’s apartment to the largest independent theater festival in the world! We are beyond grateful for all the love and support!
