Help us in our time of need (RIP Michael)

On the night of April 23rd, at approximately 10:00pm our beloved Michael Mendez was taken from us by gun violence. Christopher Mendez (Michael’s brother) was on his way home from working a full-time shift as a food vendor when he was ambushed and assaulted by an individual who robbed him of his personal belongings. A frantic Christopher went to fetch his brother (who had also just gotten home from his shift) as he was already near their shared apartment complex in the Bronx. Unfortunately, when both brothers came down to confront the individual, whom was still roaming around the area, they were both shot at three times. While Christopher is stabilized and recovering at St. Barnabas Hospital, Michael did not survive, and passed away several hours later at the same hospital. Michael’s dream had always been to come to America and live the American Dream. He wanted a better life for his kids and family, and he would not rest until he ensured progress was made which is why he left us behind and sacrificed everything to turn this dream into a reality, but in just a year and a half of living in the states Michael’s dream was short lived. That thief stole more than just a few items that night. He robbed Michael of his life and future. Additionally, he robbed my family of all of the love we had yet to give and receive from Michael, he robbed us of all the memories we had left to create, he robbed two kids of special moments with their dad and left them fatherless. Michael’s gone and now we are all left heartbroken and stuck on how to move forward from this tragedy. With saddened hearts, we kindly ask that you help support us in our time of need. En la noche del 23 de abril, aproximadamente a las 10:00 p. m., la violencia armada nos arrebató a nuestro querido Michael Méndez. Christopher Méndez (hermano de Michael) regresaba a casa después de trabajar un turno de tiempo completo como vendedor de alimentos cuando fue emboscado y agredido por un individuo que le robó sus pertenencias personales. Christopher, frenético, fue a buscar a su hermano (que también acababa de llegar a casa de su turno) porque ya estaba cerca de su complejo de apartamentos compartidos en el Bronx. Lamentablemente, cuando ambos hermanos bajaron para enfrentar al individuo, quien aún deambulaba por la zona, ambos recibieron tres disparos. Mientras Christopher está estabilizado y recuperándose en el Hospital St. Barnabas, Michael no sobrevivió y falleció varias horas después en el mismo hospital. El sueño de Michael siempre había sido venir a Estados Unidos y vivir el sueño americano. Quería una vida mejor para sus hijos y su familia y no descansaría hasta lograr avances, por eso nos dejó atrás y sacrificó todo para convertir este sueño en realidad, pero con tan solo un año y medio de vida en los Estados Unidos, el sueño de Michael fue de corta duración. Ese ladrón robó más que unos pocos artículos esa noche. Le robó a Michael su vida y su futuro. Además, le robó a mi familia todo el amor que aún teníamos que dar y recibir de Michael, nos robó todos los recuerdos que nos quedaban por crear, le robó a dos niños momentos especiales con su padre y los dejó sin papa. Michael se ha ido y ahora todos estamos desconsolados y estancados en cómo salir hacia adelante después de esta tragedia. Con corazones entristecidos, le pedimos amablemente que nos apoyen con lo que puedan en estos momentos de necesidad. Cualquier ayuda es apreciada. También buscamos justicia para nuestro Michael y lucharemos con cada aliento que nos quede hasta que se alcance la justicia. Gracias por todo su apoyo. Dios los bendiga a todos.
