Help us Bring Nanay Rose Home

Please help us bring our Nanay Rose home from the hospital. For those of you who know Nanay Rose, you know her as the small but super sweet matriarch of the Sandoval family. For those who don’t, we hope you get the chance to meet her someday. Nanay Rose is the grandma that will find out you like a particular dish and then cook it as many times as possible cause she knows you like it. She is the grandma that makes everyone eat a banana in the morning because she thinks it’s the healthiest. She is the grandma that knows who all the cousins are dating, and knows all the latest gossip within the family. She is the grandma that loves to go on grocery shopping visits to find the best fruits. She is the grandma who never misses mass. She is the grandma who will tell you over and over that she loves and misses you during the span of one conversation.

Before she was great grandma to 2, she was a grandma to 12, and before then, a mom to 4. Beyond being mother and a wife, she was an adventurer, a traveler and an entrepreneur. In the Philippines, with her jewelry business she managed to get her 4 kids through school while her husband, Tatay Johnny, tried his hand in politics. She’s endured losing her husband to cancer and her entire home and pets in a fire. Despite the hardships, she always faced the world with a smile and the enduring lesson that family is everything. She is a woman who embodied strength, leadership and character when it wasn’t common for women to be those things yet in the early 50s and 60s. With all this, she has made 3 pilgrimages to the Holy land and many adventures abroad in different countries. She lived in the US for 10 years and is now living in Angeles, Philippines.

In March 2022, she felt a bit dizzy and became out of balance and took a fall; the family took her to the hospital to check and be sure. Unfortunately, the doctors found that she had several silent strokes that caused brain damage, similar to how progressive dementia is. They managed to treat her and send her home, and she was able to spend Mother’s day and her 82nd birthday with a small party and even had distant relatives come to visit.

In August 2022, she had edema in her legs and stomach and was hospitalized once again. This time we had far more to be worried about than dementia. Within a week, she was in the ICU due to her situation worsening to having pneumonia, continued low oxygen levels that resulted in intubation and mechanical respiration, the need for blood transfusions and kidney failure. Through dialysis and a series of other procedures, she miraculously fought through it and is now in a regular room. However, with her kidney failure, she will need to be on dialysis 3x a week for life and have caregivers 24/7.

In the month that she was in the hospital, through all the procedures and time in the ICU the hospital bill charges surged as the Philippines do not have any medical insurance in place to assist. That’s why we are looking to our friends and families for support to be able to pay off Nanay Rose’s medical bills and bring her home. It will not be easy, and the doctors do not foresee her condition improving from kidney failure. However, it is our every intention to let Nanay Rose be able to live out her days at home with her family and not be confined in a hospital. As her dementia progresses, we want her to feel safe and surrounded by family in a place where she is familiar. Please help us in bringing our Nanay Rose home; any donation helps.
