Help us bring Montenegro cat Sveta home <3
During our holiday in Montenegro back in October, we were surrounded by many stray cats, everyday on our walks we would take cat food and feed them as and when we see them.
But one little one stood out from the rest. She showed up on our first night in Sveti Stefan where we stayed in an apartment with a patio. We fed her without thinking much about it. But after she ate, instead of disappearing like all other cats did, she continued to hang around us and spent all evening nearby, even sat with us on garden armchair. When it was time for us to go back inside for the night, we left the door open to see whether she would come. And she did! She was very curious, sniffed around and eventually curled up in our bed... that's how our love story started :) In the morning she did not really want to leave, but we had plans and left her out for the day. And as soon as we were back - she was with us again... and again... :)
Montenegro is a very beautiful country, but the situation for stray cats and dogs is heart breaking. We only managed to find a few charities, very few resources and hundreds (even thousands of animals struggling to survive). :( People told me that pets are dumped if they get sick, old or produce a litter. Stray dogs have some shelters, but these are in such a bad condition where dogs only get bread and water for food.
Knowing that we are leaving in a few days time and that if we don't find help, we'll have to leave her behind, was really stressing us out. We have already given her a name - Sveta (as we met her in Sveti Stefan) and started looking for information about how to help a stray cat and bring her back to the UK with us.
I've messaged some people, they directed me to other people and that's how we managed to find a lady, who was able to help. This happened on our last day by the way... so stress levels were very high! The lady has agreed to foster her and prepare all the vaccines and documents needed until she is ready to travel! And this will take around 4 to 5 months, as Montenegro is not part of the European Union, therefore to bring a pet to the UK is more complicated than to any other European country. We will not be able to fly with her directly to the UK - we can only bring her back via Ferry or Euro Tunnel. This means that we'll need to fly either from France or Belgium to Montenegro or Croatia to get her.
This will be quite costly for us, therefore we are asking you to help us bring Sveta home <3
We do not have a set budget that we are looking to achieve, but we've have put the costs below:
Foster care - 150 euros per month
Rabies shot & microchip - 40 euros
Titers for rabies antibody - 180 euros
Ferry to France and back - around £200 depending on the date and time. Euro Tunnel will be similar, but this also depends on dates and timings.
Flights - we have no idea yet, we are limited due to taking a cat with us. We do not want her in a cargo, we want her with us in the plane. Once we know when we can take her, we'll look for cheapest options.
We are asking for your help to make this rescue easier - to bring this beautiful soul from the streets of Montenegro to a forever home where she'll be loved, safe and in a company with our other rescue cat Ralph (he doesn't know it yet :D )
Thank you so much for your support <3
Update: Sveta is already in her foster care and is doing well. She had her worming tablets and first vaccine. We'll post photos and videos that her foster carer send us during the process.
