Hi, my name is Evie.
I currently have the privilege of staying in the breathtaking Wakinga community, on Mfangano Island, Kenya. The community is idyllic and secluded, but this remoteness comes with extreme challenges. The community is in need of urgent support to make even the most basic of healthcare services accessible to all.
Wakinga Community Health Centre is run by the dedicated Sagrema Foundation. It currently offers a limited range of essential services to the local community. These include HIV testing, Malaria testing, some minor surgeries. However, the running of these services relies on donations, as the people of the community cannot afford them.
The closest established health centre is over 20km away and hugely overcrowded. Without cars on the island, sick people are dependent on loved ones carrying them vast distances across rough and mountainous terrain to receive healthcare. As you can imagine, this is extremely difficult and tiresome, or even worse, simply not possible.
This is why the development of Wakinga Community Health Centre is essential. The community needs your help.
Where your money will be invested:
The most urgent goals of the Wakinga Health Centre are:
1. Solar power: Mfangano Island has frequent power cuts, ranging from hours to days. Many essential medicines must be kept in fridges. Without power, they will spoil. With your donation, these medicines can be kept safe and effective to save lives. This is expected to cost £3,000.
2. Equipping a maternity ward: Currently, mothers are forced to give birth on mud floors with no sterile equipment. This results in a high risk of infection and mortality. Wakinga Community Health Centre needs your help urgently to equip the ward with maternity beds, ultrasound machines and resuscitation equipment. With your help, we can give mothers and babies a fighting chance at life. The expected cost of this is £6,000.
