Hello Friends! I am R. DeAndré Smith, and together with some very talented artists, we’re raising funds to produce FORGING LEGENDS — a vibrant, imaginative theatrical experience that brings together the power of storytelling, history, and hope.

This is more than just a play. It’s a celebration of culture, creativity, and the belief that every child deserves to see themselves as a hero.

What’s FORGING LEGENDS?

FORGING LEGENDS is a dynamic new play for young audiences that blends classic American folklore with modern-day imagination and social themes. When two energetic best friends get into trouble at school, they’re held back from the long-awaited recess. With only their imaginations and a stack of books to pass the time, they dive into legendary stories — and the stories come to life.

From the mighty John Henry to the lesser-known but fearless Flatboat Annie, the heroes of African-American folklore leap off the page, empowering the kids to find their own strength, courage, and identity.

But it doesn’t stop there.

Fueled by inspiration, the kids begin crafting their own Tall Tale — one where they are the heroes, battling the greatest challenge of our time: climate change. Through clever thinking, teamwork, and bravery, they set off on a thrilling adventure that blends fantasy, folklore, and urgent environmental themes. Their journey becomes a powerful metaphor for the world they hope to shape — and the change they believe they can lead.

Representation matters. Our young audiences need stories where they can see themselves as bold, brave, imaginative, and powerful. FORGING LEGENDS invites children of all backgrounds—especially those from underrepresented communities—to step into the spotlight and embrace their voice.

Who We Are

We are a creative team dedicated to promoting and uplifting stories from minority perspectives. This play is written by R. DeAndré Smith, whose vision was sparked by the idea of reimagining a traditional Tall Tale around a strong female lead. As the story evolved, it grew into something even bigger — an original, inclusive epic that redefines who can be a folk hero today.

We’ve come together to create theatre that is bold, fun, and deeply meaningful — for kids, families, and communities that deserve to see heroes on stage, who reflect their own experience and dreams.
