Fernando Rivera is a husband, father, skilled carpenter, and the sole breadwinner for his family. On October 20, he was taken to an ICE detention center near Columbus, GA for traffic violations. He now risks being deported and permanently separated from his wife and two children. We are working with a truly wonderful lawyer to bring him home, but the legal costs are significant. His next and most immigration court date is on Nov 26. If it goes well, Fernando will be released from the ICE detention center and able to return home to his family in time for Thanksgiving!
Fernando is married to my sister-in-law's sister, Mildred Marrufo, and is the father of Fernanda Rivera (11 years old) and Katherine Rivera (14 years old). His detention has devastated our family and left his children anxious and afraid. In addition to the emotional toll, losing him has left Katherine, Fernanda, and Mildred without any source of income or sense of stability.

Fernando Rivera was arrested on Friday, October 18 by Gwinnett County police at a roadblock (police checkpoint) near their home. He was arrested for the second time for not having a license — an offense that Georgia immigrants without documentation cannot control. Mildred used the family's savings to pay $2,700 for the fines related to his arrest. Two days after his arrest, Fernando was relocated to the immigrant detention center, and we are not allowed to post bail for him. His first immigration court date was on October 24 and his next and most important court date is on November 26. If Fernando is allowed to stay in the US, he will be able to go to court on December 16 for the traffic violations and return to his family and job. But navigating these court cases and our immigration system is complicated and requires an experienced lawyer, especially in today's political context.
ICE agents are working quickly to deport him. Please help us work even more quickly to bring Fernando home.
