Hi, my name is Kaia Marin! I am the executive producer, co-writer, and lead actress of COW. A short film that the director, co-writer, and supporting actress Alex Ushiyama and I have poured our hearts and souls into.
Cow's Logline: A young woman battles the realities of her crippling eating disorder, struggling to survive before it consumes her.
Writer's Statement:
One word is all the mind needs to obsess. That is the premise of our film. Those “meaningless” comments and remarks made to us when we were young, and how they stick with us for years after. While we both have struggled in our relationship with our bodies, we wrote this film, not just as our own cautionary tale, but as a universal experience of growing up in this society.
As artists and performers, our bodies are always in the public eye, and therefore, under constant scrutiny and dissection. As women, our bodies are viewed as instruments that can never be out of tune. The pressure to look your best is never-ending and leads to dangerous roads.
As technology advances and mental health issues skyrocket, society looks for a quick fix to a systemic issue. Our film centers around our main character’s struggle with weight and her dangerous obsession with GLP-1 shots. We wanted to explore the complexities of childhood trauma compounded with societal pressures on women’s bodies, and how mentally and physically debilitating that experience can be.
