Help us bring back a smile

Our former student, co-worker, and friend Leslie has a 6-year-old daughter, Rosa, that is facing serious health challenges, just being diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis Autoimmune Disease (characterized by weakness and rapid fatigue of any of the muscles under your voluntary control and it's caused by a breakdown in the normal communication between nerves and muscles). It is extremely rare for a 6-year-old to be diagnosed with this disease. Leslie has two other children under the age of six. Her daughter’s medical diagnosis is putting a tremendous financial and emotional strain on the entire family as they have depleted their savings. We are humbly asking for your support to help Leslie and her daughter cover basic needs that arise as they get treatment. The sooner we can help the sooner that Leslie can just focus on her daughter's treatment.

A note from Leslie:

“My daughter was strong and healthy and a joyful little girl, until July 2021. Rosa was having difficulty talking and smiling. On August 21, 2021, I rushed her to the nearest hospital as she was having trouble swallowing her own saliva and was having breathing problems. At the hospital, she had to intubated because she could not breathe properly on her own. My daughter was transferred to Lurie’s Hospital right after and she was admitted for almost two months. My daughter was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis Autoimmune Disease which can not be cured but it is treatable. Since August, she has been admitted to the hospital at least 7 times. It has been very hard for me and my family but especially for my daughter. She is super scared of needles and traumatized because she had to be poked with needles lots of times. Additionally, she has had plasmapheresis treatment (unhealthy plasma is swapped for healthy plasma or a plasma substitute, before the blood is returned to the body), but doesn’t really last. Rosa has had to be intubated four times already. Because Rosa is too weak, she has not been able to eat. Since August, I have not been able to go back to work because my daughter has been in crisis after being diagnosed. All of my savings are now gone as we pay for many things such as food and parking at the hospital and other necessities. I would really appreciate every single one of you and your family members if you guys can help me with something, it does not have to be a lot. Thank you for taking the time to read.
