For the past several years, we’ve been working on an independent documentary about Vienna’s underground soul scene — a world driven by music, passion, friendship, rare vinyl, and all-night dance floors.

The film is finished.

But just before release, we hit a major obstacle:

the music rights.

What happened?

From the beginning, we knew music would be at the heart of this film. Early on, we secured an affordable agreement for the songs we use.

Then, during production, the rights holder unexpectedly lost the music rights catalogue and suddenly we were dealing with multiple labels and publishers — at completely different prices.

The costs for the music rights exploded and became impossible for us to cover alone as an independent team.

Why we’re asking for help

Despite all of this, we kept going.

We researched, filmed, edited, subtitled, organized test screenings, and brought the documentary to the point where it is now essentially finished.

The reactions from audiences have been incredibly encouraging.

People connected with the energy, humor, music, and personalities of this unique community — even viewers with no prior connection to soul music.

Now we need one final push to bring the film into cinemas and festivals.

45 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE explores Vienna’s Northern Soul scene — inspired by the legendary underground dance movement that began in Northern England in the late 1960s.

The film follows DJs, collectors, dancers, organizers, and music lovers who keep this culture alive with extraordinary dedication.

At its core, this is a film about people brought together by music.

Who the filmmakers are

DIETER PFEILER – idea, concept & direction

has been passionate about music and film since childhood.

His first encounter with soul music came in the 1980s through the Kent sampler "On The Soul Side," which a friend from the Mod scene had copied onto a cassette tape. Since then, he has been a devoted Northern and Modern Soul fan and a passionate record collector.

He is a founding member of the DJ and event organizer collective Beatzentrale. 45 Revolutions Per Minute is his first film project.

PETRA NICKEL – concept & direction

leads a double life between cultural projects and speech therapy.

Completed training as a speech therapist (Werner-Otto-Institute, Hamburg, 1995) and actress (paritätische Bühnenreife, Vienna, 2001), intensive engagement with the writing of short stories, fairy tales and comics since early school days, gained experience as a researcher, assistant director and production manager in the field of documentary film, developed plays and performances as an author and has been primarily occupied with the development of her own screenplays since 2003.

Seit mehreren Jahren arbeiten wir an einem unabhängigen Dokumentarfilm über die Wiener Underground-Soul-Szene — über Musik, Leidenschaft, Freundschaft, seltene Vinylplatten und durchtanzte Nächte.

Der Film ist praktisch fertig.

Doch kurz vor der Veröffentlichung standen wir plötzlich vor einem Problem, das wir allein nicht mehr bewältigen können:

die Musikrechte.

Was ist passiert?

Von Anfang an war klar, dass die Musik das Herzstück dieses Films sein würde. Deshalb waren wir unglaublich froh, früh eine leistbare Vereinbarung für die verwendeten Songs gefunden zu haben.

Dann kam alles anders:

Während die Produktion bereits in vollem Gange war, verlor der Rechteinhaber verlor überraschend die Musikrechte - und wir hatten plötzlich nicht bloß mit zahlreichen Labels und Musikverlagen zu tun, sondern auch mit völlig anderen Preisen.

Die Kosten explodierten.

Was ursprünglich für uns als unabhängiges Filmteam machbar war, wurde plötzlich zu einer kaum überwindbaren Hürde.

Warum wir trotzdem weitergemacht haben

Trotz allem haben wir den Film fertiggestellt.

Wir haben recherchiert, gedreht, geschnitten, untertitelt, Testscreenings organisiert und jahrelang daran gearbeitet, diese besondere Szene authentisch einzufangen.

Er berührt Menschen — auch jene, die bisher nichts mit Soulmusik oder Northern Soul zu tun hatten.

45 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE begleitet DJs, Tänzerinnen, Sammlerinnen, Veranstalterinnen und Musikliebhaberinnen der Wiener Northern-Soul-Szene.

Im Zentrum stehen Menschen, die mit unglaublicher Leidenschaft eine Musikkultur lebendig halten, die seit den späten 1960er Jahren Generationen verbindet.

Es geht um Musik.

Aber genauso um Gemeinschaft, Hingabe und die Kraft gemeinsamer Begeisterung.

Das Team hinter dem Filmprojekt

DIETER PFEILER – Idee, Konzept & Regie

ist seit Kindertagen musik- und filmbegeistert. Die erste Begegnung mit Soul erfolgte in den achtziger Jahren über den Kent-Sampler „On The Soul Side“, dem ihn ein Freund aus der Mod-Szene auf eine Musikkassette überspielt hat. Seither ist er infizierter Northern- und Modern Soul-Fan sowie leidenschaftlicher Plattensammler. Er ist Gründungmitglied des DJ- und Veranstalter Kollektivs Beatzentrale. 45 Revolutions Per Minute ist sein erstes Filmprojekt.

PETRA NICKEL – Konzept & Regie

pflegt ein Doppelleben zwischen Kulturprojekten und Logopädie.

Abgeschlossene Ausbildungen als Logopädin (Werner-Otto-Institut, Hamburg, 1995) und Schauspielerin (paritätische Bühnenreife, Wien, 2001), intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Schreiben von Kurzgeschichten, Märchen und Comics seit der frühen Schulzeit, sammelte Erfahrung als Rechercheurin, Regieassistentin und Aufnahmeleiterin im Bereich Dokumentarfilm, entwickelte als Autorin Theaterstücke sowie Performances und beschäftigt sich seit 2003 vor allem mit der Entwicklung eigener Drehbuchstoffe.
