My grandmother in the Philippines, is now 82 years old, and has been struggling with walking for some time now. On her way back from the grocery market in the Philippines, she fell into a pothole and broke her leg. Leaving her with a limp that never went away.

Eventually, the Philippine doctors recommended inserting metal into her leg to help with walking. The metal worked for a few years until suddenly, my grandmother started acting differently. She wouldn’t eat and refused to leave her bed. Soon after, my family in the Philippines brought her to the hospital where the doctor diagnosed that her hemoglobin is too low, creatinine is too high, and she is suffering from severe gout.

The doctors decided that they need to perform surgical “debridement”, where dead tissue is removed. During surgery, they discovered a rare bacterial infection that eats flesh wound and spreads quickly in the body, possibly causing death called, “necrotizing fasciitis”.

Now her bleeding won’t stop, and if this continues, they may decide to amputate her leg.

My grandmother doesn’t have health insurance in the Philippines. Everything is coming out of pocket. She is one of the sweetest and kindest women in the world. She is incredibly selfless and doesn’t ask for much.
