Help Uncle Robbie Survive Type I Diabetes
Donation protected
I was 10 years old when my Uncle Robbie was born. He is the youngest child of my grandfather and was just 10 years old when his dad passed away. That same year, he also lost his grandfather, who helped raise him. While Robbie was loved as a child, he often did not receive basic dental and medical care like routine doctor’s visits. Robbie's mom had issues of her own and could not always provide that care. Another 12 years later, at the age of 22, Robbie's mom passed away. After Robbie's mom died, he moved across the country to Maryland to be closer to his older half-brothers. Finally, at age 23, Robbie obtained health insurance through his employer. Over the last 9 years, Robbie has worked hard at a local grocery store, bought a car, rented a room in an apartment, and has even run for congress.
Recently, at age 32, Robbie was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. He has lost about 70 pounds in the span of about one year, going from about 200 pounds to just about 130 pounds. Likely, he has had Type I diabetes for years, and it had gone untreated. When left untreated, this autoimmune disorder causes nerve damage. Robbie’s nerve damage is now extensive, and he is in constant pain. He wants to keep working but physically cannot work more than 4-5 hours a day. He says he is fortunate that his employers are letting him work, and he wants to work. Robbie is in the care of good doctors and is requesting a pump to help him control his insulin levels. He is paying his copays to see his doctors, but because of the pain, his hours cannot be high enough to continue to support the cost of his care.
Robbie was dealt a tough hand, but he has worked hard to make the most of the hand he was dealt. Robbie has faith and is optimistic about the future. Robbie now needs support to help offset the costs of his medical care. Any help you can provide will help him continue receiving treatment so he can continue to live his best life.
