My name is Umar, and I never thought I would find myself in this position. Not long ago, I was working as an independent insurance adjuster, living in the West End of Atlanta, and doing my best to support my family. But after being evicted from my home due to missed rent payments, everything started to unravel. My car’s transmission failed, making it impossible for me to get to work. I tried to keep going by using my father’s car, but after he suffered a stroke, his vehicle also broke down. I even started working for DoorDash to make ends meet, but now I can’t do that either. With no income, I’ve been forced to stay wherever I can—sometimes in my father’s car, sometimes at a friend’s place, and now temporarily at a fraternity brother’s house in Smyrna.

On top of all this, I am a type 1 diabetic and have been running out of my blood sugar strips and insulin. I’ve tried to get help from the American Diabetes Association, but the process has been difficult, and I’m struggling to afford even the basics. My storage unit was auctioned off, and I lost family heirlooms and personal items. My 16-year-old daughter checks on me because she’s worried, and I’m trying to get back on my feet so I can see my 4-year-old son again. My father is dealing with dementia after his stroke, and my mother has her own health issues. I’ve applied for food stamps, but without an address, it’s been tough. Every day, I go to the public library to use the Wi-Fi and look for work, but I feel like I’m running out of options.

I am reaching out for help because I truly have nowhere else to turn. The funds will help me secure a safe place to stay, repair my vehicle so I can work again, purchase essential diabetes supplies, and make a payment to child support to keep my driver’s license active. Any support you can offer will make a real difference and help me start over. Thank you for reading my story and considering a donation.
