Uma is our sweet seven-year-old ferret who has brought so much joy and comfort to our family. She loves giving kisses, cuddling, and sharing silly moments with her brother Klaus—often sleeping belly up with her tongue out or snuggled up as Klaus uses her as a pillow. Uma’s gentle nature and love for mutual grooming have made her a beloved companion, especially for my child, Ash, who found hope and happiness through caring for Uma and her siblings during a difficult time.
We adopted Uma, Klaus, and their late sister Mina from a local ferret rescue in May 2023, determined to keep their little family together. The ferrets quickly became an integral part of our lives, helping Ash through mental health challenges brought on by the pandemic. Sadly, we lost Mina several months ago, making Uma’s health even more precious to us. Uma’s insulinoma, which has been managed by recommended treatments, has continued to get worse, causing dangerous drops in her blood sugar. Despite expensive medications and frequent small meals, her mobility has declined, and she is no longer able to move around or play in her large cage or playroom. We have had to put food near the places she sleeps for quick and easy access. The vet has recommended surgery as soon as possible, as the medications are much less effective and the health issues and medications have significantly decreased her quality of life.
Surgery offers Uma the best chance at a longer, happier life—free from constant medication and the threat of sudden blood sugar crashes. It would mean the world to Ash and our family to see Uma active and playful again, and to give her the best possible care in her golden years. Any support will help us cover the cost of surgery and ensure Uma can continue to be the loving, silly companion we cherish.
