Help Uma Build Her Dream in IT!
Bhagya Nepal, a local NGO in Nepal, is raising funds for Uma Khadka, a resilient 20-year-old young woman from a rural village in Rukum West, Nepal. Uma, orphaned at age 9, is fighting against all odds to earn her degree in Information Technology while simultaneously serving as the legal guardian for her two younger brothers.
Uma's life changed forever when two tragedies struck her life. Just after her 9th birthday, her father disappeared without a trace, and only a few months later, she watched her mother fall to her death while harvesting fruits from tree. Overnight, Uma was left completely alone with no family to care for her and her little brothers. She was then sent to live in an orphanage in Kathmandu.
Upon turning 18, Uma was forced to face the world alone as she had to leave the orphanage. Uma watched as those she grew up with in the orphanage were adopted sponsored to go abroad, or received funding grants to help them pursue their education. Instead, Uma stepped into the world with nothing—no financial safety net, no guidance, and no support system. She worked tirelessly just to pay for basic food and rent, all the while she was focused on one day being able to study Computer Applications (BCA) to become a software engineer.
Uma finally landed her first job at a data collection company and did not even have a laptop to use for work- nor could she afford it. Thankfully, a kind supporter from abroad gifted her a second-hand laptop, opening her very first door into the tech sector. She faced additional series of challenges when the company shut down, leaving her alone with little savings to get by until landing her current job in photo editing.
Now, Uma has been working for nearly three years, but her basic salary only covers her daily survival. Quality IT courses in Nepal are expensive, making higher education impossible for her without help.
She has been accepted into the Bachelor in Computer Applications (BCA) program at Nagarjuna College of Information and Technology in Kathmandu, but she needs financial support to make her dream a reality.
Here is Uma’s Vision:
• Earn Her Degree: Build a successful career in software engineering and Artificial Intelligence.
• Pay It Forward: Launch her own tech company in Nepal to mentor and support underprivileged girls from similar backgrounds, giving them the chance to build a better life.
