Help UIndy Orchestra Perform in Washington, D.C.

My name is Dr. Laurie Williams, and I am writing on behalf of the University Symphony Orchestra (USO) at the University of Indianapolis. Our orchestra has been invited to perform in Washington, D.C., on March 8, 2026. This invitation is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and artistic excellence of our students.
Unfortunately, at least half of our students will not be able to attend this performance. You might be wondering why I am trying to bring this to the attention of Taylor Swift's fans. Months ago, I planned a concert for our students that would focus on an Americana theme. The grand finale is last movement from the “New World Symphony” by Dvorak who, though not an American, wrote the piece while he was living and working in the United States. I chose to open the concert with Florence Price’s “Dances in the Canebrakes” because I wanted my students to know and appreciate the music of a great Black female American composer. Finally, I chose Taylor Swift's “Enchanted” because that’s how I felt when I first heard it performed by an orchestra. I also wanted my students to appreciate the contemporary music of a great American female composer. In a time when our institutions of art are under attack and women are losing ground in the fight for equal representation, I think it is my duty to take a stand and push back in whatever ways that I can.
That’s why I am actually reaching out in desperation. I am so sad that I have several students who will not be making this trip. This performance will not only provide our members with an unparalleled opportunity to showcase their talents on a national stage but also serve as an inspiration for their futures in the music industry. We have also been partnering with a small-town high school to bring 12 high school students to perform with us. These kids have worked so hard to learn the music and perform at a high level. At the two performances of this program that we have held, I have seen colleagues and parents with tears of pride and joy.
In order to cover the costs of the trip, we are seeking assistance. We are estimating the total expenses to be approximately $80,000, of which we have already raised nearly $32,000. We would be deeply grateful if you could consider a donation to help make this dream a reality. If 10,000 people give just $5.00, we will be able to bring every student who wants to perform. Your support will directly benefit the UIndy kids & a local HS Chamber Orchestra.

About my kids: the orchestra is a 50/50 mix of students who are music majors and non-music majors who want to keep playing their instruments. Many of them are first generation college attendees. All of them are receiving financial aid and scholarships to attend school. Almost all of them are holding down part or full time jobs to pay the bills while they are full-time students. With the current economy, we are all feeling the financial strain worse than ever before. If I could afford to pay for my students to participate, I would pay out of my own pocket in a heartbeat. People see that UIndy is a small, private school and they think we have a lot of money. The truth is that I have no budget for instrument repairs, much less travel. I am at the point of having to withdraw from the performance, which is why I am finally asking for your help.
We are passionate about seeing the arts continue to thrive regardless of the political climate. We are also committed to making this opportunity accessible to all members of our group, regardless of their financial background. With your partnership, we can ensure that our students can participate in this historic event and continue to contribute to the cultural fabric of our community. Thank you for supporting our students!!!

Warmest Regards,
Laurie
