My poor baby girl, Tyra, had to go through two surgeries in a span of just 11 days. Two weeks ago, she started vomiting and lost her appetite, so we rushed her to the Emergency Hospital here in Long Beach. After several imaging tests, Tyra was diagnosed with a foreign object obstruction in her GI tract and needed emergency surgery. Thankfully, she made it through and came home after 36 hours. We were so relieved to have her back, but just six days into her recovery, she suddenly began vomiting again and stopped eating. We brought her to urgent care, and after two visits, she was admitted for IV fluids and an ultrasound. The results showed another blockage in her intestines, and she needed a second emergency surgery just 11 days after the first. This time, the obstruction was caused by an adhesion that was blocking her small intestine.

We were devastated. The cost of her care nearly doubled because of the complications, and our vet bills have become overwhelming. We’ve used up all our credit limits on CareCredit and ScratchPay to cover the costs, and now we don’t know how we’ll pay the hospital for her ongoing care. My husband works as a janitor in an assisted living facility, and I am still searching for a full-time job. We moved to the US from the Philippines just over a year ago, bringing our two dogs with us because they are our family. My husband and I have been married for 17 years, but we were not blessed with children—our dogs are our world.

Tyra is still in the hospital, fighting to recover. She’s making small progress, but she isn’t eating yet, and her care continues to add to our bills.
