Help Tyler Recover From a Traumatic Brain Injury

Our lives changed in an instant.

My other half, Tyler, was riding a longboard down a mountain in California when he crashed at approximately 40 mph. I brought him to the hospital thinking he needed treatment for the severe cuts, scrapes, and road rash covering his body. When Tyler was brought into the hospital, his injuries were serious enough that his clothes had to be cut off of him. His phone was also broken during the accident. We never imagined how serious his injuries truly were.

While evaluating him, doctors discovered that Tyler was bleeding in his brain. Shortly after, he lost his ability to speak and walk.

What made everything even more terrifying was being told by the doctors in the beginning that Tyler could die from his injuries. Hearing those words about your other half is something I cannot even begin to describe. We are incredibly lucky and grateful that he is still here with us today.

Tyler is improving, but I want to be very clear when I say that his recovery is slow — very slow. Every little improvement is something we celebrate, but he still has an extremely long road ahead of him.

Over the past week in the hospital, Tyler has made some progress that we are incredibly grateful for. He has regained most of his speech, but he is still unable to walk independently. He currently needs a walker and can only take small, slow, unsteady steps. He is extremely dizzy, has vision problems and is currently seeing three of everything, and requires someone with him 24/7 because of his risk of falling. He needs help with basic everyday things such as getting to the bathroom, showering, and moving around safely.

His entire body is also covered in severe road burn from the accident. He has been treated between the trauma and burn units as doctors work to manage both his neurological injuries and the injuries to his body.

We were originally in California for a business trip and had planned to spend a little time afterward enjoying a vacation together before returning home to Florida. That vacation ended almost as soon as it began.

We had to cancel our flights home, and we currently have no clear date for when Tyler will be released from the hospital.

Because the hospital does not allow me to stay overnight with him, I have had to find a hotel every night while also renting a car so I can travel back and forth to the hospital. Anyone who has spent time in California knows how quickly the cost of hotels, transportation, food, parking, and everyday necessities can add up.

The financial impact is becoming overwhelming.

We are both unable to work right now. Tyler is expected to be unable to work while his brain heals, and even looking at screens worsens his symptoms right now. I am also unable to return to work because Tyler requires constant care and 24/7 supervision. He cannot safely be left alone because of his difficulty walking, severe dizziness, vision problems, risk of seizures and risk of falling. I need to be there to help him with things most of us normally take for granted, including walking, showering, using the bathroom, and getting around safely.

Once he is released, this journey will be far from over. Tyler is expected to need physical therapy and speech therapy as he works toward walking normally, regaining his strength and coordination, and continuing to recover from his brain injury.

We are also facing a major challenge simply getting him home.

Because of the swelling and bleeding in Tyler's brain, we have been advised that flying could put additional pressure on his brain and may not be safe for him right now. That means we are preparing for the possibility of having to rent a vehicle and drive from California all the way home to Florida.

A one-way rental across the country is extremely expensive between the rental itself, one-way fees, gas, hotels, food, and everything required to safely make the trip. Because of Tyler's mobility issues, traveling by bus or train is not a realistic option either.

If you know Tyler, you know the kind of person he is.

He is the person who would give someone the shirt off his back without thinking twice. He loves people, he will talk your ear off, and he has spent his life helping people whenever he can. He is usually the person offering help—not the person asking for it.

That is what makes writing this so difficult.

Right now, we desperately need help.

Funds raised will help us cover:

- Tyler's medical expenses and continued care

- Physical and speech therapy during his recovery

- Hotels while I remain near the hospital

- Rental car and transportation expenses

- The cost of getting Tyler safely from California back home to Florida

- Gas, lodging, and travel expenses for the cross-country drive

- Lost income while Tyler and I are unable to work and while I provide the constant care he needs

- Expenses associated with the 24/7 assistance he will need during his recovery

We don't know exactly what the next few weeks or months will look like. Just days ago, we were being told that my husband could die, and today I am grateful beyond words that he is still here fighting.

He is getting better, but this is not a fast recovery. His progress is happening little by little, day by day, and we know we still have a very long road ahead of us. Right now, our focus is simply getting Tyler through this, getting him walking again, getting him safely home, and giving his brain and body the time they need to heal.

Just wanted to give everyone an update — we are finally back in Florida and HOME. ❤️

The last couple of weeks have been something we never could have imagined. What started as a longboard accident in California turned into Tyler being hospitalized with a brain bleed, losing his ability to talk and walk for a period of time, and us being told just how serious everything was. Watching him slowly regain his speech, get back on his feet, and continue fighting every single day has been an emotional roller coaster, but I am beyond thankful that he is still here and continuing to improve.

We still have a long road ahead of us and recovery is going to take time, but being back home feels like such a huge step forward.

There have been so many people checking on us, praying for Tyler, sharing our story, donating, sending messages, offering us places to stay, helping with travel, and simply reminding us that we weren't going through this alone. I know I haven't been able to respond to everyone individually, so I wanted to post this update in case I missed anyone.
