Hello,
I am Elizabeth Greive 25 year old college student and in 2023 I had three living relatives on my father’s side living on a remote farm in Indiana, my grandma Jackie who is 83 years old, my uncle Kenny who has cerebral palsy and requires full time care in which my grandma has taken care of my uncle for the past 60 years my father also lives on the farm. And in December of 2023 my father had a stroke and went paralyzed on the left side of his body he continued to live on the farm and didn't want to accept help from a nursing home and home health aides provided by the state were on a six-month waiting list if you wanted one to help with basic needs for yourself. My grandmother and uncle did not want to go to a nursing home she said she would be open to the idea in six months. Meaning my elderly grandmother was caring for herself and my uncle and my father was doing his best to get around and take care of the animals on the farm and feed and care for himself with only half his body. However, in May of 2024 my grandmother slipped into a coma where she almost passed away, she hadn't eaten or taken her medications in three days and was so sick she couldn't form words. My uncle requires help to get out of bed get changed and be fed so he was taken to the hospital with her also. She ended up getting better and they both went to a nursing home for long term care and rehab, my father stayed on the farm where my siblings in Ohio then had to take care of coming to the house cleaning up after my father giving him food and groceries and paying for cleaners and making sure the pets were being cared for. In the time after my grandmother went to the hospital the grandchildren now needed to take over the bills and handling things since my father's didn’t have a strong mental state after his stroke. From then on me and my siblings got to see the state of the farm and the finances around my grandmother, there was unpaid mortgages and overdue bills, there were loans taken out and hospital bills. We learned she had a second mortgage that she had never made a payment towards. From there her grandchildren were able to set up and become power of attorney for her, my uncle, and my dad. Then we were able to sell the house to my brother, so they didn’t lose everything, and he has taken over the house payments but there is still loans and debts for medical care for my grandmother and uncle with also debts owed to the nursing home. Then unfortunately in August of 2024 after only a couple of months of living on his own my father fell one night outside on the farm and wasn't found for a day; he was found with a broken collarbone on the ground and was taken to the hospital and then to the same nursing home my grandmother and uncle were at. This started the process of all three of my family members doing rehab and living in the nursing home, making friends building hobbies and family trying to visit as much as possible while trying to convince them to move closer to more family in Florida. After many talks my grandmother said she would speak to me about the move after the holidays when I came back in February. I came into town in Indiana after driving 15 hours from Tampa Florida on February 16th to surprise my family and on my way out to the nursing home on February 17th my grandmother passed away. I'm not kidding…... I’m still mad at her for dying. So now it’s even more important to ask for help and get my family closer to me. I know my grandmother would want her disabled sons to have some kind of trust to not only pay for their care but also incase anything happened to them. I want to pay off the $12,000 in nursing home bills $5000 in credit card debt $2000 owned to the Funeral Home from my grandmother's funeral and then have some money aside for them for their care such as getting Kenny a new handicap chair and my father new dentures as he only has four teeth in his current dentures. My brother Zach has spent the last 9 months primarily speaking with the lawyers in Indiana with my help on some things I could manage from Florida trying to follow Medicaid’s rules and regulations to try to help my family keep their home. Zach secured the house and all the family's precious items such as pictures and family valuables by taking over the house payments but works overtime to afford this so that's why the move to Florida where myself and my other siblings live is so important so we can take over care for them for years to come since he is quite busy looking after the farm. I am on my own still trying to retain a lawyer in Florida to get my dad and uncle to Florida, this requires a lot of research as Indiana and Florida have different regulations as far as Medicaid and money regulations and the cost of moving them here.
I’m doing this because my grandmother Jackie or Mawmaw was the kindest person I knew in my life, my grandparents took care of us on the weekends and on school breaks and I lived with them in the summer, I was very close with my whole father’s family side so to be able to help with their medical bills and this time of needs means a big deal to me. I also would love for them to be closer to me so I can see them more and it would be a blessing and I know my Mawmaw would be happy! Thank you to anyone that can help my family.
- sincerely a poor 25-year-old college student who's just a girl
