Help Tury continue receiving medical attention

On June 17, Guatemalan’s Father’s Day, my cousin Tury (Arturo Galvez-Sobral Castellanos) was rushed to the ER with breathing problems. The reason? Despite extreme care and precaution, the entire family got infected with COVID in May. Tury’s infection was particularly severe, and he is having serious side effects on his health.

When he was admitted to the ER his oxygen level was only 40%, and the prognosis was not a positive one. His wife and first born were advised by the medical staff to be prepared for him not surviving the night. However, God had other plans for him, and Tury did survive the night! Although he was intubated for 14 days, had a tracheotomy performed to help him breathe, the most recent challenge he is facing is Murcomicosis (or necrotic black fungal infection). He had surgery this week with an optimistic diagnosis that the infection did not reach the bone nor his brain, but he is still fighting for his life.

His wife and children are not allowed to see him – he is still in the ICU, and has been since June 17th! They are allowed only to spend their days in the waiting room to receive information directly from the doctors. We are heartbroken.

Now Tury has strong vital signs, his lungs and kidneys are working without the help of machines, his oxygenation is normal, and the surgery to remove the necrotic tissue was successful. While all this is promising news, he still remains in a coma.

Tury is a happy person, a great singer, a loving son, caring father, and a hard worker. He is loyal, giving, and a great friend to many. We want him to have the opportunity to continue receiving the treatment and attention that he is receiving at the hospital. We want him to have the opportunity to come back to us to brighten our days with his charisma, sense of humor and loving, musical nature. But we need your financial support.

The medical insurance was maxed out a couple of weeks ago, and the hospital bills are mounting faster than our ability to procure the needed funds. The family has completed several fund-raisers events; which have been very well received, and though they have raised substantial funds, they still prove insufficient to keep pace with the hospital bills. Tury is Patient 2 with Murcomicosis in Guatemala, and this is a link to a social service announcement aired today (07/13/2021) in a local news segment.

A day at the hospital is around US$10,000, and one week of the Mucormycosis treatment amounts to US$96,000 (one shot every other hour for seven days at $571.00 for each shot).

Tury has Faith, family and friends who love him, care deeply for him, and continually pray for him. While he still battles these series of health challenges, let’s join forces to support him and his family during these unbelievably difficult circumstances. The funds we raise will be used to cover the outstanding medical expenses and everything that might come next.

El pasado 17 de junio, Dia del Padre en Guatemala, mi primo Tury (Arturo Gálvez-Sobral Castellanos) fue llevado de emergencia al hospital debido a problemas respiratorios. ¿La razón? A pesar de cuidados extremos y muchísimas precauciones, a finales de mayo la familia entera se contagió de COVID. La infección de Tury fue particularmente severa, y él está teniendo serios efectos en su salud.

Cuando fue admitido en la emergencia del hospital, su oxigenación era de tan solo 40%, y el diagnostico no era optimista. Su esposa y su primogénito fueron notificados por el personal médico que debían prepararse pues era muy probable que Tury no sobreviviría la noche. Sin embargo, Dios tenía otros planes para él, ¡y Tury sobrevivió la noche! Aunque estuvo intubado por 14 días, le practicaron una traqueostomía para ayudarlo a respirar, el reto más reciente que Tury está enfrentando es Murcomicosis (infección necrótica del hongo negro). Tury fue operado la semana pasada y el diagnóstico es optimista de que la infección no llego a sus huesos ni al cerebro, pero él esta aun luchando por su vida. Tury es el Paciente 2 con Murcomicosis en Guatemala.

¡A su esposa y sus cuatro hijos no les han permitido verlo – el sigue en la unidad de cuidados intensivos desde el 17 de junio! Y su traslado a un hospital público es imposible debido a su delicada situación. A su familia cercana les permiten pasar los días en la sala de espera para recibir noticias de los doctores. Todos estamos con el corazón en pedazos.

Ahora Tury tiene signos vitales fuertes y estables, sus pulmones y riñones ya están funcionando sin la asistencia de las maquinas, su oxigenación es normal y la cirugía para remover el tejido necrótico fue un éxito. Mientras todo esto se suma a noticias positivas, el aún está en coma.

Tury es una persona alegre, un gran cantante, un hijo amoroso, padre devoto de su familia y un hombre sumamente trabajador sin vicios. Tury es fiel, dadivoso, y un gran amigo para muchos. Queremos darle la oportunidad de continuar recibiendo el tratamiento y atención que está recibiendo en el hospital. Queremos darle la oportunidad de regresar a casa, de alegrar nuestros días con su carisma, su sentido de humor y su manera cariñosa y musical. Pero necesitamos ayuda financiera.

El seguro médico se agotó hace un par de semanas y las facturas del hospital están aumentando más rápido que nuestra capacidad para obtener los fondos necesarios. Incluso varias rifas de recaudación de fondos recientemente completadas han sido muy bien recibidas y, aunque han recaudado fondos sustanciales, aún resultan insuficientes para mantenerse al día con las facturas del hospital. El día de hoy se hizo un servicio social en un noticiero local pidiendo ayuda financiera.

Un día en el hospital cuesta alrededor de US $ 10,000 y una semana de tratamiento para la Murcomicosis equivale a US $ 96,000 (una inyección cada dos horas durante catorce días a $ 571,00 por cada inyección).

Tury es un hombre de Fe, tiene familia directa y familia política que lo amamos, nos preocupamos profundamente por él y oramos continuamente por él. Mientras Tury aun lucha contra esta serie de problemas de salud, unamos nuestras fuerzas para apoyarlo a él y a su familia durante estas circunstancias increíblemente difíciles. Los fondos que recaudemos se utilizarán para cubrir los gastos médicos pendientes y todo lo que pueda venir a continuación.
