Hello everyone, I'm Trudie Kane, a vibrant 58-year-old woman, happily married and loving every moment as a nana. My life is a joyful adventure, sharing experiences with my husband as we explore, camp, fish, fossick, and soak up the beauty of the great outdoors. I'm passionate about creativity, expressing myself through various crafts, including painting, woodwork, mobiles, and leatherwork, constantly seeking new ways to bring ideas to life.
Currently I am a patient in the Townsville University Hospital awaiting a transfer flight to Atherton Hospital, and I am staying optimistic for the next chapter. For the past 16 days I have been 4-5 hours away from home and have no idea when I will be transferred.
Wednesday 12th March at 8am I underwent cervical spinal surgery and unfortunately a complication arose. My life took a dramatic turn in an instant. The sudden release of a compressed spinal cord, blood vessels and nerves triggered an overload in my nerve system, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey. Functional neurological disorder (FND), a brain-based condition impacting the communication between my brain and body, has presented itself. FND affects the pathways controlling movement, speech, thinking, feeling, and walking, and I'm determined to rise above it. As a result, my right arm and leg are experiencing a form of paralysis, but I remain hopeful for a full recovery with time, physiotherapy, and determination. My body is healing, and my nerves are slowly repairing themselves. Although I'm experiencing involuntary spasms in my leg, I can still move my toes, and I'm confident that I'll regain control. My arm, though currently a dead weight, is still a part of me, and I'm working to revive it. I've lost bladder control, but I'm focused on regaining my strength. Despite the challenges, I still have feeling and touch sensation in the affected areas. Initially, my left side was unaffected, but in the second week, I started feeling numbness from my waist to my shin. I'm choosing to see this as a minor setback in my journey towards healing and recovery.
My recovery is going to involve a wealth of empowering physiotherapy, psychology and Occupational therapy, I will require innovative aids and equipment like walking aids, a special lift bed and other equipment to assist with using my hand and with my healing.
To walk and use my hand again with intense physio etc is in a time frame of approx 14months to 2years
