Help Truck Driver Cover Mortgage After Stroke for Birthday

On June 4th, my dad Bernardo, a dedicated truck driver from Charlotte, NC collapsed suddenly while waiting to pick up a load in Monroe.

Thankfully, someone saw him and immediately called for help. Because he got to the hospital so quickly, he was able to receive a life-saving medication that helped limit the damage to his brain. The stroke left him unable to move the right side of his body for more than a day. He spent three days in the hospital and underwent two CT scans, one echocardiogram, and one MRI. He was originally meant to transfer into an acute rehab program for at least 2–3 weeks. However, because he doesn’t have insurance, the hospital discharged him home with only a walker and a few exercises.

He required 24/7 supervision for about a week due to his lack of balance and the blood thinners he’s taking, which put him at high risk for both falls and bleeding. He has also begun treatment for high blood pressure and cholesterol, and he's using nicotine patches in a brave effort to quit smoking. Fortunately, an outpatient physical therapy evaluation on June 17th determined that therapy is no longer needed, as he is now walking without a walker.

Through it all, he remains the strong, independent man we know and love. He has been the primary financial provider for my mom and their household for many years, but they have been living paycheck-to-paycheck.

We are in the process to receive help to cover the medical and grocery bills and hope that some or all of those costs will eventually be covered or reimbursed. But there’s no immediate aid to help with daily living expenses as he has not been cleared to return to truck driving. El 4 de Junio, mi papá Bernardo, un dedicado conductor de camión de Charlotte, Carolina del Norte, colapsó repentinamente mientras esperaba recoger una carga en Monroe.

Afortunadamente, alguien lo vio y llamó de inmediato por ayuda. Gracias a que llegó al hospital tan rápido, pudo recibir un medicamento que le salvó la vida y ayudó a limitar el daño en su cerebro. El derrame cerebral lo dejó sin poder mover el lado derecho de su cuerpo por más de un día. Pasó tres días en el hospital y le realizaron dos tomografías (CT scans), un ecocardiograma y una resonancia magnética (MRI).

Inicialmente, debía ser trasladado a un programa de rehabilitación intensiva por al menos 2 a 3 semanas. Sin embargo, como no tiene seguro médico, el hospital lo dio de alta y lo enviaron a casa con solo un andador y algunos ejercicios.

Requirió supervisión 24/7 durante aproximadamente una semana debido a su falta de equilibrio y a los anticoagulantes que está tomando, los cuales lo ponen en alto riesgo de caídas y hemorragias. También ha comenzado tratamiento para la presión arterial alta y el colesterol, y está usando parches de nicotina en un valiente esfuerzo por dejar de fumar. Afortunadamente, una evaluación de fisioterapia ambulatoria el 17 de Junio determinó que ya no necesita terapia, ya que ahora puede caminar sin el andador.

A pesar de todo, sigue siendo el hombre fuerte e independiente que todos conocemos y amamos. Durante muchos años ha sido el principal proveedor económico de su esposa y de su hogar, pero han estado viviendo al día.

Estamos en proceso para recibir ayuda que cubra las cuentas médicas y de supermercado, y esperamos que algunos o todos esos gastos eventualmente sean cubiertos o reembolsados. Pero no hay ayuda inmediata para los gastos diarios, ya que aún no le han permitido volver a trabajar.
