Help Trey Recover from Housing Scam

Hi, I’m Trey. I’m 19. My girlfriend and I are in a rough spot. We were looking for a house due to our situation and found one. We then texted the landlord and were able to make an agreement after a few texts and calls. We talked for about 2 weeks and then met up with him and talked to him for a little bit. After seeing the house and talking to him, we made the deposit to hold the house. The next day, we were supposed to meet him at the address to get the keys and make the first month's rent. But once we showed up to meet him at the house, he never showed up. After about an hour of waiting at the address and trying to contact him, a moving truck showed up with a small family. I walked up and asked them if they were renting and who the landlord was, but they said they paid in full for the house. So, we were sadly scammed and hard. After trying for several hours to contact him and even emailing him, we went to make a police report. I had his name, email, and number. All they said was they would send it to investigation and hopefully be able to do something. We don’t really have anywhere to go right now. Not asking for a lot, but a little goes a long way.
