Hi Everyone,
Those of you that know Trey and have gotten to experience his huge personality in such a small little boy.. you know how happy he is, how he can brighten anyones day.. how he loves everyone and just makes this crazy world a better place because he is in it. And you probably already know that he has come a long way from birth.. from a crazy nightmare when he was born.. A lot of you know Trey’s story.. but for those of you that don’t… here is the shortened version.. and the reason I am reaching out..
He was brought into this world, through a very traumatic c-section.. which resulted in him having multiple strokes and a lot of bleeding on his brain that caused permanent brain damage in multiple areas of his brain. The doctors weren’t sure if he would even survive. I made Trey (yes he was a few days old at this time) pinky promise me that we would be okay, that we would get through this together.. I just needed him to be strong enough to pull through and we’d get through the rest together.
Before his first birthday, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Trey has a lot of deficits from the damage to his brain but if you didn’t know any better, you wouldn’t be able to tell.
Trey put in the work and surprised everyone!
Last year, after being seizure free for almost 4 years, Trey started having break through seizures. Even though his medications have been adjusted multiple times, he continues to have these break through seizures. He had test after test, imaging after imaging and saw specialist after specialist and it has been determined that surgery would be the only other option in hopes to stop his seizures since the medications are no longer effective.
We have completed all the steps of the brain mapping process that is needed prior to this procedure…
We recently met with the neurosurgeon. My hands are shaking and tears are in my eyes as I write this… On 1/9/2023, Trey, my baby boy.. will have a complete right sided hemispherectomy in Pittsburgh. Trey’s complete right side of his brain will be disconnected from the other half of his brain.. The right side will remain connected to blood supply and will remain inside his skull. The whole right side of his brain will be disconnected with the expectation that the damaged areas of his brain will no longer be able to send out seizure impulses anymore. If the surgery goes as planned *fingers crossed*, Trey’s team of doctors are expecting that he can be 90% seizure free.
6 months after his surgery, if all goes as planned, they are hoping to begin weaning him off some of his seizure medications to see how he does. Trey will need to remain in the hospital after the surgery for recovery and intensive rehabilitation but they are unsure how long that may be. We have already gotten an order for a stroller/wheelchair.
Any money raised will go toward anything he needs while in the hospital and afterwards, medical bills, any bills to help me be there for him because I don’t plan on leaving his side for a single moment during this time..
Despite it all.. Trey’s up beat and positive attitude has only grown stronger. He has always been my rock, my ray of sunshine, my super star.
From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate you for even taking the time to read this..
From Trey - an air “fist bump and high five”
Thank you
