Help Travis E. Smith Defend His Future

A single traffic stop has left Travis E. Smith facing a felony charge that could carry up to 15 years in prison, the loss of his right to own firearms, and consequences that could change the course of his life.

We are raising $5,000 to help Travis secure experienced legal representation and build the strongest defense possible.

According to Travis, he was stopped for a "dim tag light" on his 41-year-old station wagon, even though he believes the light was functioning properly. What began as a routine traffic stop turned into a three-hour search that ended with his arrest over a firearm he believed was legally configured.

During the search, officers also found an empty marijuana container left behind by a passenger who has a valid Florida medical marijuana card. According to Travis, he was unaware the container was in his vehicle and did not know of its existence before the search.

Travis has no criminal history. According to Travis, the firearm at the center of the case falls into what experienced firearms experts have described as a legal gray area. He maintains that he believed the firearm complied with the law and had no intent to violate any regulations.

According to Travis, police also seized several of his other lawfully owned firearms, ammunition, and equipment, even though those items were not alleged to be illegal. He states that he was not provided any form of receipt for seized property or documentation listing the firearms, ammunition, and other items taken into police custody.

The cost of defending against felony charges can quickly become overwhelming. Funds raised will go toward attorney fees, firearms experts, court costs, legal filings, investigation, and other expenses necessary to provide Travis with a proper defense.
