Emma Delgado, my daughter, was diagnosed with epilepsy over two and a half years ago. While her full tonic-clonic seizures go through cycles of clustering and periods of seizure-freedom after medication adjustments, epilepsy continues to affect her daily life in ways that aren’t always visible.
Emma has a persistently high spike-wave index, particularly when she is tired or asleep. This type of ongoing epileptic brain activity is strongly associated with cognitive, behavioral, and developmental challenges. As a result, Emma struggles with anxiety, emotional regulation, focus, and confidence…challenges that are further compounded by the side effects of the multiple medications she must take to control her seizures.
A trained support dog would provide Emma with both medical and emotional support. With proper training, Oreo (her dog) can help alert family members when Emma is in distress, activate alarms and assist in keeping her safe during or after seizures. Just as importantly, Oreo can provide constant companionship, grounding and reassurance- helping Emma manage anxiety, feel secure in public spaces, during medical testing/treatment and regain independence in her daily life.
Having Oreo by her side would allow Emma to participate more fully in school, social activities and everyday experiences with greater confidence and safety. This training would not only support Emma medically, but also improve her emotional well-being, independence and overall quality of life.
The funds raised will help cover the cost of specialized training to prepare Oreo to be Emma’s support animal. We would be incredibly grateful for your support in helping Emma and Oreo on this journey. Your generosity will make a real difference in Emma’s life… giving her the chance to simply be a kid again, with fewer worries, more freedom and her best friend by her side.
