When we first realized years ago that Daniel would have seizures for the rest of his life, we looked into service dogs. We discovered that the average cost to train a dog was $30,000! With that knowledge, we immediately gave up any hope of getting a dog for Daniel.
Today, with the help of generous family members and their contacts, we have been blessed to receive the opportunity to train a dog for $8,000. The dog was carefully selected after the trainers looked at upwards of 40 puppies and she immediately bonded with Daniel. Family donated the funds to buy the dog and we have $2,000 of the initial fee to start her training.
This leaves us $6,000 short of the training fee. In addition, the trainers are located in Texas so we will need to make several trips back and forth during her 2 year training period. Any additional money raised will go towards the trainers who have been such a blessing to us. Their fee is very small considering the time involved.
Star will be trained to do three things. First, she will detect and alert us to seizures. Second, she will be trained to support his head and keep him safe during seizures. Finally, she will be trained to stay by him if he wanders away and ultimately stop him if he is in danger. This is a huge blessing for us, both for our peace of mind and Dan’s safety. Anything you can donate would be greatly appreciated.
