I’d like to thank those reading for taking the time to read my story. Last year, at the age of 14, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This is a forever long illness and one that has flipped my life and the lives of my family members upside down. Every night mostly around 2-3am, my blood sugar drops to scary levels. My parents hear an alarm, thanks to my continuous glucose monitor, and my mom quickly comes to my room to wake me up and feed me something to help stabilize my blood sugar in order to bring it back into range. Both my parents are sometimes in a deep sleep and have trouble waking up to the alarm sound. I, for that matter, am in a super deep sleep and never hear it at all. There is a lot of responsibility riding on their shoulders and thankfully they have managed to tackle this issue without incident thus far. My mom has noticed though, that my 2 year old poodle that sleeps next to her, is quick to respond to hear the alarm and follows her faithfully over to my room once she is on her way over. He jumps onto my bed, smells me, licks me, and lays down next to me. I became curious about his behavior and by researching, I found out that there are specifically trained service dogs that through scent are able to detect when blood sugar levels are dropping a.k.a. lows and are able to alert their owners. It is very expensive to have a dog trained as a service dog (upwards of 30K). I had to think of a way to help solve my financial dilemma. I thought fundraising and working in the summer may help me gather the funds needed to pay for my dogs training. My poodle is highly intelligent, and with the proper training he would make a fantastic service dog to detect and alert my parents and myself of fluctuations with my blood sugar. Even now without any training, he seems to have somewhat of an awareness of needing to be there for me. He would even be able to alert us way before a low becomes critical. I ask that if you are able, to please hear my plea and assist me with contributing towards the Go Fund Me account I have created. The money collected will be used to have my dog specifically trained as a service animal for blood sugar detection or diabetic alert dog (DAD). I thank you for your support in this matter and it would help tremendously if this message could be passed along.
