My name is Tony Huerta. I was working hard to make it through life and hanging on financially. I found a lump/abscess on my perineum, and within 4 days it grew to be very painful. I went to my doctor at Kaiser, and he took one look and referred me to the Emergency Room at St. Anthony North Hospital in Westminster, CO. Little did I know how serious it was. Within 4 hours of arriving, I was rushed into emergency surgery after the doctors saw my CT scan.
I was in surgery to remove tissue that was a septic bacterial infection. The cut went from my perineum up to my lower abdomen with a 4” cut on the surface, 4” more under the skin (tunneling), and 2” deep.
I woke up in the ICU, and the doctor explained that if I had waited to come in, it could have spread into my bloodstream and could have been fatal.
Over the next 36 hours, the bleeding would not stop. The doctor checked my wound and saw how much blood I was losing. He immediately got my consent to operate right there in the ICU without anesthesia and found that I had several arteries that were pulsing blood out on every heartbeat. He cauterized the wound. I had lost about half of my blood. I received two blood transfusions.
I was in the ICU for 3 days and in a normal hospital room for another 7 days. They dressed my wound with open-celled foam and wax and body tape while adding a wound vac to pull out fluids and hopefully the rest of the infected tissue, which included my testicles. I had gangrene throughout. They put me on 4 different antibiotics until the pathology came back.
So, here I am finally home. I’m unable to work my recording studio self-employed job and Uber, my side gig, because I can’t sit without having massive pain. Also, law enforcement frowns upon driving while on opioids.
My recovery time is estimated to be 4-6 weeks with home nurses coming in twice a week to redress the wound. They can’t sew it up in fear of trapping the bacteria in there.
I’m asking for funds to help me get through this tough time. My bank account is drained and I have no income until I can work again. I’ve been fully self-employed since 2005 and have always dreaded getting hurt, knowing it would wreck me financially. That fear came true through no fault of my own. The infection started internally, most likely from being diabetic.
I hope my friends could chip in a little to help me through this.
Love,
Tony Huerta
